I'm an Ashby girl back living half a mile from my childhood home after 37 years away in the south.OH a southerner but loves living up here- generally, not particularly happy about no post since Tuesday. Can't figure out why in town... have telephoned Scunny post office for sorting office tel number but they're not answering apparently inundated with phone calls!

Welcome! Sounds a bit like a 'Carry On' at your home. Hope it's soon sorted.

Think you're spot on with the pre programming, My mother grew up in 1920s-1930s Depression and then WW2. She had real 'thing' about about having enough enough food in- she'd known real hunger as had my father.

So sorry to hear about dog. That kind of medical incompetence whether animal or human is incomprehensible. Hope your birthday / Xmas turns out better than anticipated. Try to see what positive things you can. You sound at rockbottom at present so your only way has to be UP! Thinking of you and wishing you well.

Your kitten sounds as daft as my late boy cat. He always hogged the fire and when we started using a halogen heater he stood near to it his fur started smoking!! We soon had to stop that

Don't know where I got the stockpiling gene from as it's not something my parents do - they have enough in and never have completely empty shelves but I am better stocked than the village shop. (Mind you with our village shop that's not hard!) Struggled in our last place as it was tiny and had a typical renting carp kitchen, didn't even have enough cupboards for my regular food and spices let alone my stockpiling desires - ended up with things piled under tables and allsorts - very messy. The kitchen here was one of the major things that sold us on the new place has a massive kitchen and dining room extension and a proper pantry under the stairs took one look and thought I was in heaven. Well the cupboards are now full, as is the pantry and both fridges and the freezer - going to loook for another freezer on fleabay to go under the worksurface and the last lots of pickled red cabbage I made went on top of the cookery book bookshelves in the dining room as the pantry is full - oops! Still at least we won't run short in this weather and can happily help out friends in the village if the snow gets worse.

Seems to be melting a bit here today, just hope it doesn't freeze tonight or it wil be leathal, we've done ok so far the roads haven't ever been too bad but we're only just in December and a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach says the worst is yet to come, probably after Christmas now so don't forget to stock back up on anything used, I have set some money aside for after Christmas - I shall be scouring the sales and the short dated Christmas stock for good bargins. I get fed up of the tinsel after a while but don't mind eating Christmassy food for as long as I can!

    HI everyone,

Hope everyone is ok and keeping warm and not going too mad with cabin fever. I love your game idea Ceridwen (alas I don't have the one you mention but it sounds interesting).

Grandma247, thank you so much for you kind words. :A I think part of the problem is that I feel so helpless ... I hate depending on tradesment since I have been so let down. The guy today seemed good though - job done. He did what I want and put the lagging and isolation valve on the repaired pipe. Glad you found someone decent to sort out your fascia boards.

Thriftkitten, I too am glad you listened to your instincts - that first vet should really pay you back what you gave him.

BB - glad your kitten is doing so well (even if a bit intent on self-destruction with candles!) :)

Lora - welcome! You've come to a great place, the folks here are lovely.

Hope everyone else is ok - hugs to anyone who's not.

Must dash, am off into town as I've been cooped up so long.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Well its raining here today, it started to snow for a while last night, and the kids were hoping it would continue enough for a snowman, but t hen it stopped and now its raining and melting. Have raced out this morning and done a bit more shopping, mainly bits and pieces, and will pop to Asda later to get a bigger shop - going to start using the Asda savings card and get some of the stuff for Christmas.
Got the tree lights yesterday, and will prob pick up a tree later this week.

Interesting that most people keep a good store as a result of mothers and war etc, not true in my case, I keep a good store because of you people here, who have taught me so much these last couple of years. :)

Have a funeral next week (the guy who died a few weeks back, my mum and his wife have been tussling over arrangements for what seems like forever!!) my problem is that its strictly no black - and I only wear black, I literally have no tops that arent black and only very dark jeans/trousers!! I really dont want to be disrespectful of his wishes (and this seems to be the only one of his wishes they are actually following!) but also not keen on buying clothes i will never wear again.

We're in Scotland and, like lots of rural children with long bus journeys, ours have to leave the house at 8o'c and don't get back until 4.30 (school is 9-3.30) so both journeys in the dark at the moment.

The reasons I desperately don't want BST/BST+1 are purely selfish. I am very much an early morning person and like to get as much done then as possible eg feed animals (working croft), an hours gardening (in spring), household chores and, if possible, a walk along the beach (although can't usually fit in the gardening AND a walk - I have tried walking along the beach with a head torch and nearly broken my neck!!) all before I have to get the children off to school. That way, the chores etc don't eat into my working day and I can start work early (I work from home and the mornings are precious as it's my best, most creative time - but I do need to have got the chores out of the way first - upbringing!) It is also "my" peaceful, thinking time first thing in the morning before everyone else is up and making demands left, right and centre! If it isn't going to get light until 9 or even 10 in the winter and also be dark later than now for longer into spring, then I am going to struggle - I'm sure I will find a way to reorganise things - I'll have to - but it is going against my nature and I actually feel quite panicky and helpless about it - which I know is silly given that it's not necessarily even going to happen, but it's how I feel. I don't mind the dark winter evenings especially as the weather is usually wild and wouldn't want to be outdoors anyway. I am quite happy to do indoor things, cook ahead, sit by the fire and sew, kids' music practice, internet etc.

Thriftkitten, I hope your little pug makes a swift recovery.

Stay warm and safe all those of you still coping with the snow and ice.

Kidcat, how about a brightly coloured scarf or something. Might be able to borrow one?

Guess the "mindless games" to which you refer are Internet freebie games? Have never even ventured near them - not interested...

Now there is one possibility for MSE'ers going a bit stircrazy indoors - ie playing realworld games with other MSE friends on t'Internet.

Me - I've got precisely one board game - ie "Gift of Enlightenment" - well it had to be one like that for me didnt it?:rotfl: - (thinking to self "Well - Kittie is the sort of person who might just have that one too?" - so if you do Kittie and you're up for trying to play a game via the Internet some time we could give it a go...).

How can you tell its too cold and icy for me to fancy venturing out at all?:rotfl:

no, me and internet games :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: never, I wouldn`t even know how to find one. I was talking about games for ds (the little pink handheld thing) like stacking things before they all fall down. lol, I don`t spend that long on them but the scrabble one is great as me and dh have one each and can play scrabble in comfort ie sitting back, feet up on a comfy chair

Seasalt you beat me to it, I was going to suggest a bright scarf or other bright accessories like a hat or bold jewellery that way you're respecting the spirit of his wishes to have an air of celebration and colour rather than the mourning black all round, but I'm sure he wouldn't expect someone who always wears black to not do as that is your look not put on for the occassion.
