I love one of the medieval ways of measuring time - 12 hours of daylight, 12 hours of night regardless of season. To make this work one hour of time in the summer was longer than one hour of time in the winter. It fits in beautifully with the growing season, and suits those of us who have hibernating tendencies perfectly!

Think you're spot on with the pre programming, My mother grew up in 1920s-1930s Depression and then WW2. She had real 'thing' about about having enough enough food in- she'd known real hunger as had my father.

Thats one of the things that one realises (usually in later life....) - ie that we are "pre programmed" to follow on in our parents footsteps as to how to do things....:rotfl:

So - making a virtue out of necessity I've sat down and deliberately thought through the way my parents act to decide whether I personally agree that is the best way TO act for me ...

    End result:
    - my parents believe in making sure of having adequate stocks of everything in = so do I
    - my parents live within their income = well...I've never taken out a loan I wasnt absolutely sure I could repay and I now live within my income

I WILL manage my mothers huge "thing" she has about always always having everything absolutely "bang up to date" regarding housework/paperwork/etc at all times one day.....honestly I will :rotfl: - because I understand that her reasoning on this is that everything is ALWAYS "under control" and ready to get on and deal with any emergency that crops up instantly without having to worry about the "daily duties" (ie because they ARE always bang up-to-date).

    *******************************

    Reet...on a different topic:
I HAVE come up with some O.S. New Year resolutions in the end (having thought there werent any left to make...<cough>) =
    1. Always defrost my darn freezer twice a year:o (middle and end of the year would be good times - so I dont have to wonder when its due....:o)

    2. Always make darn sure the flippin' freezer door is shut PROPERLY before wandering off and leaving it <cough> having realised recently that I didnt:o

Its proving to be a "job and a half" to defrost that darn freezer today..<cough> with the combination of not having defrosted it for a year or so and the fact that I DID accidentally leave the freezer door ajar a few weeks back <cough>.

(have now worked out what I am obviously most concerned about if stocks started running short - errrr...HOW much fruit and butter do I really think I need in?:rotfl:).

Thank goodness I've now got that better dehydrator and will be storing produce as far as possible by drying it in future (rather than trying to find a little slot to bung it in the freezer......)...ahem...

Blooming heck! it's +3C outside and raining, I went out earlier for my usual smoke.. it feels quite warm.

I am led to understand from various weather sites that this mild spell will be short lived, so it would be good to re-stock anything that's been used, get things we realised we needed and lag pipes and whatever.

Hugs and huge support to all those having difficulties recently, I used to think it was just me having a $**t time of things, but it seems to hit us all at differing times of life. For me personally it felt hard as the whole family look to me to be the strong one ( couldn't be further from the truth reallly, it's all front)

I have learned that sometimes you can keep it together if you fake it alll being managable. Seems to keep everyone else calm and able to cope, support each other and pull through better.

    Odd life at times innit?

Wouldn't day and night time hours have to be different lengths as well?

But it's true, it's only a problem because of set hours eg school/work etc. If you could just adjust your day to the daylight hours as presumably they did in medieval times - eg one hour after sunrise etc - there wouldn't be a problem!

  • Please can i come and live somewhere, where there is a real sense of community spirit???

it's started to thaw out a bit here today so i thought i'd try and dig the car out so we can go and stock up on food as we're starting to run a bit low!
so i'm out there with my garden spade, digging away and felt someone watching me..... it's a guy from down the street and he turns and says to me 'why don't you get your husband to do it??
me: i would do but he's at work
    man: oh right then
and i turn back round and carry on shovelling away, a couple of minutes later, i feel like he's still watching me, so i turn round and he is, then he turns on his heels and goes in his garden!! :(
i'm not sure why i was expecting any help or even an offer of help but it just would have been nice..........

anyway after a good 45 mins of shovelling i managed to get the car out, now i just need to get it out the cul de sac and onto the main road and i'll be a happy bunny!!!

have got soup cooking away in the SC, it smells absolutely delish and i can't wait till tea time, gonna go and make a batch of mince pies soon and DD wants to write her letter to Santa so that the elves can collect it tonight while she's asleep and then if i can get the car out of the cul de sac, we will pick DH up from work and nip to Asda while we're there - if not we can go shopping tomorrow instead!!

((hugs)) to anyone who needs one today

That sounds a nice idea - and I think that anyone who isnt "tied to the clock" (ie because they are unemployed/housewives/retired) can readily set their own timetable anyway and decide to get up when its light enough and go to bed when its dark enough (ie regardless of what "clock time" says..:)).
  • I have to make/find DD a costume for Monday for the nativity, she's playing Mary so idealy it needs to be a long navy skirt and light coloured top but i haven't been able to go and look for something suitable because of the weather(and we can't really afford for me to buy something) i could make something but there's a few snags in that plan

    1. i can't sew
    2. i don't have any wonder web stuff
    3. i don't have any old clothes that are navy

i do have a black skirt and a brown skirt that could be made into some sort of outfit but Mary is traditionally seen in Navy and white so i don't really want to send DD with an outfit made from a different colour, although i am sure that school would understand me not being able to source an outfit due to weather

so does anyone have any bright idea's on what i could do????

And I bet this man would be the first one to knock on your door and ask if you'd got a spare pint of milk if you were snowbound and he'd run out ........ His name isn't Andy Capp is it??:rotfl: Of course, he's also likely to be the chap sitting firmly in his train seat while an 8 month pregnant woman is having to stand for the entire journey.

Well smells good here now, got a spicy pumpkin tagine cooking away in the oven for our community groups jacob join supper this evening, just got to make some little flabreads now. I'm really looking forward to it - we're all bringing a dish and the cookbook we got the recipe or idea from and then we are sharing a meal in the village hall and having a nosy at each others cookbooks for new ideas.

Come and live in our village dolly it's lovely! And to think we only moved here by accident as it was the only house at short notice that would take a dog, the intention was to move back to the town when our 6 months was up and we had more time to look for a place. Nearly 3 years later we have moved but only to a larger house 150 yards down the road to accommodate our growing family!
