The reason I believe it was taken off the market just over a year ago for under sixes is because it does have antihistamine in it and some mother somewhere gave her child too much and they ended up in hospital - the child recovered ok though. Not sure if that is true but it was what one chemist told me.
That's not true. They changed the advice after reviewing the evidence for how well they worked and looking at all the reports of adverse events including those needing hospitalisation. With regard to those children's cough/cold medicines containing antihistamines - There were 127 serious events and most were in under 6's. Only one case was from accidental overdose.

Waaaah, it rained here! We still have snow on the ground and it is currently sleeting but I had been excited at the prospect of 20cm as predicted by our official weather forecasters. They always seem to get it wrong for where I live! Still, there might be more later!

Could I show off a little? I'm a rubbish cook and you Old Stylers put me to shame :o - but I did make a yummy mushroom stroganoff yesterday and there's enough for at least 2 more meals. I love these mini culinary successes :) (although the rice was a bit soggy even though I cooked it for the usual amount of time). You lot are brainwashing me and am thinking of having another go at Twinks (they didn't turn out great for me last time I gave them a go). Problem is I would probably just eat 'em all!:D

Hope everyone is well and staying warm - I'll add my voice to those wondering where Sammy is? Hope she is MIA for happy reasons like being too busy with her prizes!

  • Nuala I like to think I am a really good cook, but rice beats me every time! I have given up and get OH to make a vat of it once a fortnight, and freeze it in meal sized portions.

  • Well, it is snowing steadily here in Kent, this morning.:T

I'm sat here watching the robin bouncing around outside. It is quiet and it just looks so clean and peaceful.:)

    Sammy-Kaye, where are you girl?:(

I really used to struggle with cooking rice especially with the method of measuring proportions of rice to water and cooking until all the water is absorbed. (How many pans did I burn that way ?

Now I follow the old Fanny Craddock method whereby you just throw ordinary long grain rice into a big pan of boiling water and boil rapidly for 12 minutes. The ample amount of water stops the starch making it all clog up. Then drain well. Brown Rice needs a lot longer to cook and usually needs about 25 minutes on this fast boil method.

I've heard of those rice cookers - yours sounds like the deluxe model! :D
Thanks Jackie, I don't feel so bad now knowing I'm not the only one!

  • I have just finished my online order for christmas food from the local food suppliers. Fruit and veg, milk and cheese etc as there is no way I am going to the shops pre christmas and it is so nice to get it delivered. I got myself a morrisons savings stamp card and put £97 on it and will get £3 on top so I reckon that is pretty good interest. If the snow stays away today then we are off to spend it on the christmas drinks and goodies and then that really is IT. Shopping all finished

I`m very glad that I started ages ago and my cupboards are crammed full and I have 30kg of flour in the shed (in lock n locks) so am well hunkered down and can make way for all those busy people who have to go shopping. Lol, no-one is making mock of my store cupboard now!!!

I much prefer brown rice but was using up a pack of Mr T basmati - it said cook for 10 mins and it seemed to absorb way more water than usual - wasn't swimming in it as my rice usually seems to so was tricky to drain. And like you say, it was all starchy and clogged up. Ate it anyway of course!

I also did the burnt pan thing when I tried that method in the past BTW! :o

    Good morning,

It was a good decision to do my weekly shopping yesterday. We have a little bit of snow, but unless it snows again I don't think there will be much left for the chldren to play in after school.

Jedi ds is 6, and doesn't have any tummy problems that I know of, but anything other than half a spoonful of nurofen or the medised (which he hasn't had since he was old enough to start taking nurofen) results in vomiting. He was prescribed antibitics once. I think we managed to get about a spoonful in out of the whole bottle. He seems to be surviving ok.

The cat is in danger of turning to stone from mainly sitting in front of the fire, no matter if it is on or off. I did throw her out in the garden yesterday, and she minced across the flagstones on tiptoe, shaking her paws as she went, then came back indoors at high speed.

I hope everyone who is snowed in is managing ok. Take care all of you

Ahh can I have a little rant! Its my mummy friends on mummy forum and some on facebook.

They drive me mad latly about boasting of spends over xmas.

Its weird how media give assumption everyones tightening their belts but still see plenty of people spending as they always have and not budgeting.

Sometimes being os can be lonely as so many people dont seem to understand, they just say sounds like lot of effort or havent got time yet none of them work!

Started to hate to see waste, slowly trying to convert my mam to shopping around and more cooking from scratch as she got made redundant 6months ago.

Your post made me smile - all I can say is its a mystery how some people manage...we are long term married, we both work (although not in high paid jobs nowadays) we don't smoke or go out or go away on holidays or drive expensive cars or wear expensive clothes - our luxuries are our pets...but we have acquaintances where either the wife or they both have not worked for years but seem to be able to do everything (holidays, cars, designer clothes, pubbing & clubbing, eating out etc) that we can't afford to . . . they wear T-shirts all year long cos they superheat their homes whilst we sit watching TV with the heating off or as low as it will go ? . ? . . . . I'd love to know where we are going wrong! !
