I know where you're coming from Parsons Wife - I've feared for some time that some group/country might attack our country's computer systems. Well - we know that at least one country is regularly hacking into our systems. It scares the bejesus out of me to see how we are still heading down the route of becoming ever more dependant on the Internet..
I've certainly taken the view for the last few years that the Internet is a very valuable tool - but there must ALWAYS be "real world" back-up in place just in case....(and thats at every level - personal or national). Always a useful motto - "Never ever stick all your eggs in one basket"...0 -

Hello everyone,
Not posted for a while again, real life keeps getting in the way. Many congrats to Annie & Monty, what lovely newsand all the other OS mums-to-be
We had our 20 week scan a few weeks ago and found out we're having another girl
quite a shock as i was convinced it was another boy but we're thrilled.
Has anyone else noticed how expensive some charity shops are getting? I went in to Barnardos today whilst in town looking for baby clothes (we kept all DS's so are overrun with blue bits but have nothing for a girl and hardly any neutrel stuff) and they wanted £1.99 for one short sleeved baby vest - straight across the road in Asda you can get a pack of 3 for £2I'm all for supporting charities and buying used instead of new if possible but just can't afford to do it when i works out like that.
Freezing cold here today but no snow yet much to my relief and DH and the kids disappointment lol
Hope everyone is ok

Suspect it is a sign off the times & people are hanging on to things longer rather than donate & go off to the shops to buy more.0 -
Oh well...trying to see the positive side on things. When someone who barely knows me today asked (as in genuine enquiry - rather than politeness query) how I am and I mentioned my concerns re my job her instant response was "Well - are you going to start up a business then if you lose your job? (in a tone that implied she thought I really might/should)". Its a thought that I tend to discount - because I know every other British person seems to have that as one of their "secret dreams" - so I tell myself I might be just be delusional about my chances if I ever did (as lots of other people clearly are....) - even though a strong/very successful "business gene" is there in both sides of my family.
I then looked up the "value" of a couple of recent purchases I made at what I thought were very good prices - and discovered they were indeed - ie VERY good prices:D. I have no objection whatsoever to finding that I could instantly make thousands of % profit on something:D.
Goes off telling self "Dont forget...dont forget....lots of others wonder and THEYVE got it wrong - whats to say you havent too?"...but its my little booster for the day that maybe...just maybe....:). Now off for eating my dinner - and I've got an idea for summat I could usefully put into a communal thing I am involved in - and that I see no sign yet of anyone else in a similar communal thing having ever put in...so I've got that to work on and get sorted out to my satisfaction - and I will be doing it for nothing (other than personal satisfaction....).0 -
Charity shop prices seem to be bizarre. I saw a simple vase last week that was £1.99 in the charity shop and a very similiar one in the "proper" shop next door that was 50p in the sale.
On the other hand I got some good strong jeans for £2.50 because I could not find anything that weight in the shops, and they were selling really nice men's jackets in one charity shop for £5.99-£6.99, well and truly smart enough for an office job. Then a scratty t-shirt looking rather worn is the same price as a new one in a lower priced main-stream store. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

I agree with your motto Ceridwen, 100%.
Things that are happening nowadays, I find very, very scarey.
There are so many things that COULD happen now that, 30 years or so ago, I wouldn't have dreamt possible of happening .
Sometimes, the realisation, can be a serious wakeup call and a nasty push into the complexity of a lot of today's problems.:(
It's so much at once, sometimes, that it boggles my mind.:oFelines are my favourite

My local charity shops are amazing, one in particular is an Alladins cave! They seem to have a blanket pricing policy ie all the womans tops and mens shirts are £2.75, jumpers are £3.50 etc regardless of whether they are from Primark or a designer label! DH has benefitted from lots of timberland shirts and jumpers and a fab winter jacket for only £7.00. I had a look in town and Timberland jackets are over £100 and shirts around the £50 mark!! Someone in my neighbourhood must be a real fan!! but i for one am not complaining, i chucle to myself when we are so skint and yet hubby has a wardrobe of clothes that we could never have afforded new, even when we were better off!0

On another note got a delivery from approved foods yesterday which included a gallon of red wine vinegar for 49p. It came in a plastic gallon container with a simple sticker on the side saying "red wine vinegar liquid, type 6%" DD's BF commented that it looked as if it had come from Osama Bin Ladens front line!! Ideas for red wine vinegar greatly appreciated :rotfl:0

I agree with your points about prices in charity shops, I always tell the assistant when an item appear dearer secondhand than new, after all the clothing is given to them so why charge so much....
I dont mind paying my fair share , but when you see a jumper thats had more washes than you can count why do they ask so much for it.....?
They wouldnt survive if we didnt use their shops would they?....
Now to change the subject, ive now had 2 acupuncture appointments and I feel so much better its unreal...:T The first morning I woke after the session I didnt need my usual 3 pain killers to try and help my poor headaches....wow its really been a good week for me....I havent got so much pain in my face and fore head either. I feel like a new woman...:D I reckon in the last week ive only taken 14 pain killers in a week instead of 10 per day........thanks for mentioning acupuncture helped you, cos its certaintly helping me . thanks ras...:T0 -

Good to hear that things are progressing well re your health.
I have tried a LOT of alternative/complementary therapies by now and nothing (be it conventional or otherwise) works on me if its just something that works by virtue of placebo effect (my sceptical nature I guess....)...but acupuncture is one of the therapies that I rate personally...:)0 -
Bombshell moment yesterday, DS rang me and asked if him and his gf could move in with us they are being evicted from their flat as they can't afford the rent. GF has just completed her nurse training but has not managed to get a job so far and DS is doing an apprenticeship in social care for which he receive the grand total of £95 per week. So far her nursing bursary has paid the rent and DS's money has paid bills and food. When her bursary ended they applied for housing benefit but because of their age were only entitled to £220 a week, their rent is £450. We re in an IVA so money is very tight and strictly accounted for, I so wish we could help them, they both work so hard, DS is working in an old peoples home during the day, attending college a couple of evenings a week and doing driving lessons, a birthday present from his grandmother, he is 22 and i am so proud of how he is trying to get a life together for himself. GF had an interview yesterday but didn't get the job, lots of candidates apparently. They are moving in next Thursday, i am hoping things will be ok but i can see extra pressure for us all ahead! I feel so sorry for young people today everything seems to be stacked up against them, it seemed so much easier when i was younger, when i went to uni my fees were paid and i got a grant, my first flat cost me £9750 and it was in a good area. When i see the kids demonstrating yesterday i really feel their frustration, they have been really let down by the powers that be. If the next generation feel there is little hope, what hope is there for the rest of us:(0
