When my kids were wee and we were poor, we ate big pots of home made soup and then a big pot of home made rice pud, plus the essential porridge.
The odd thing is, when we were given my gran's rice pudding, we never really realised it was because we had no money, and a little bit of pudding rice fed us all. It was just so yummy, and we used to fight over whose turn it was to scrape the dish.
I still like porridge too, though I've chickened out of making any form of pudding dumpling so far, which my gran also used to fill us up and make the pennies stre.....tch.0 -
I didn`t hear a thing last night and apparantly the rain was hammering on our flat roof and when the wind blows hard then it sounds like a train as it goes under and around the solar panels. Must be the sleep pillow that I shoved under my pillowcase, also I resurrected a light that dies down like sunset and wakes up like dawn and my sleeping pattern is def improving.
I`ve been an incredibly busy b this am, taken a set of dunelm blackout curtains up and hung them with dh, who ironed them. Cut out and made 10 sleep bags filled with hop flowers and lavender and packed them in 2s in ziplock bags that I had ages ago from costco. They`re for christmas boxes. Tidied my room and found my ds so am a very happy bunny as I loved prof layton and also the sodukus and playing scrabble on it with my dh, while sitting back with feet up
All this thing about feeding children is making me smile. We all had one meal for all and that was it since they were weaned. When my ds was learning to cook (they had a meal each to do from time to time) he would make his favorite curries and I am the one who had to grin and eat, he never knew but I`m not one for curries
I packed those cheese boats and they look really good and solid so just put them into bags in the freezer. They will be very useful when grandchildren come down
I haven`t caught up with everyone`s background yet but can see that greent has been throgh the mill and am sending good vibes to you and hope that you are on the way up now0 -
:j My first ever approved foods order just arrived! :j
But.....what the !!!! am I gonna do with a 3 kilo tin of pineapple bits?! :rotfl: It's a VERY big tin....! Ideas on the back of a postcard, please....best idea wins...some pineapple
I'm another one who gets big tins of pineapples and then wonders what to do with them! But yesterday I made a pizza and put pineapple pieces on top, then made rice pudding with caramelised pineapple (got the recipe from the bbc website) and then had porridge with pineapple this morning which admittedly was a bit random. I've also made pineapple crumble before which was very tasty.
Just a few ideas for you there
hope everyone is doing okayTimes is 'ard.0 -
BB1984 - Re your pineapple mountain. I guess the main dilemma is that once you've opened the tin you then have to deal with the whole lot of it in fairly quick succession. You'll probably have to move it out of the tin into a plastic or glass container in your fridge, otherwise it will quickly develop a tinny flavour.
Do you have a stick blender and some leaf gelatine. If so, you can whizz down a reasonable quantity of it in some of the juice which has been heated up enough to dissolve the gelatine and make a large pineapple jelly. This will keep in your fridge for up to a week, depending on how many people you have to feed.
You could stick blend some more of it until it's a fine purree, pour into 1 pint empty milk botles and freeze and use some of it to make a fruity porridge, instead of adding milk.
And there's always a pineapple upside down cake, or pineapple muffins.
But I agree, with a tin that size, you could be in danger of pineapple menu fatigue0 -
Pineapple smoothie
Cakes like above
with gammon steaks
make some HM pizzas and put some on there
Next time you order, do you have a friend who you can split the order, and cost, with? Wish I had someone to share an order with as I just don't have space to store those kind of amounts of food atm!!!
(I didn't think pineapple would set in a jelly because of some enzyme... not sure)0 -
Am gutted I missed my big brands delivery today, they say they will redeliver tomorrow so am hoping they avoid school times. Did consider collecting from depot but bearing in mind how much the stuff weighs I decided against as realistically I probably couldnt lift it in and out of car!!
Going to look at approved food this week and see if its worth an order there too.
Re- wheat bags - does anyone have a link to instructions - am thinking would make a gift for kids friends if I use appropriate material.0 -
Re - pineapple, could it be cooked till soft then frozen in ice cube trays to provide small cubes for using in rice pudding, porridge etc?0

Im craving pineapple now :rotfl: Im going to have to put an order in to Approved foods or one of the others, Im looking forward to having a big box delivered. As for the tortilla wraps I do them as a big sandwich with cheese onion and any leftovers in then cook them in a dry frying pan till the cheese melts - cut them in to wedges and the kids clear them in seconds. I think they are called empanadas( but I may be wrong
) Other than that I use them as normal pancakes, filled and rolled up, cheese sauce, bake and there you go.
I think winter arrived here in the night just as I took my bedroom curtains down to line them  Obviously I would replace them normally but all I own is packed away. I think it may take us a while to get over this building work, could be years before I find anything.Clearing the junk to travel light

I will get my caravan0 -
About the pineapple mountain - apparently you can freeze it as long as you freeze it in juice.0

Thank you ellanutella, primrose, frugal, kidcat, ginnyknit and cranky40 - some brilliant ideas for me....I think I might have to order another tin of pineapple to make them all....!
I love OS, can always rely on getting useful responses! I think I will have to freeze at least some of it, but that's ok. I've got quite a few little pots so I can freeze it in small portions and it'll be lovely in cobblers, crumbles etc. I wonder if I could whizz it up and then freeze it, if that would turn into a sort of sorbet type thing....
The giant tin itself is crying out to be made into a plant pot too!
