Gailey, ... yeah, I forgot about the free cheese. I find it hilarious! Our next batch of austerity measures are looming but it'll all be fine as we can have cheese on little sticks. I remember they used to give butter vouchers with the dole years ago. Not fair on vegans, I guess they get nothing.

Well - I could always "trade" any cheese at Lets Trading Events....

When my kids were wee and we were poor, we ate big pots of home made soup and then a big pot of home made rice pud, plus the essential porridge. I made one meal and they ate it or starved. My daughter, now 42, still remembers sneaking into the bathroom to eat some toothpaste cos she was starving. I said well that lesson must've worked then, if you still remember it now :D:D
I'm the fussy one in the family, there's an awful lot of things that I won't eat.

    TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

LETS sounds fab, I have been looking for something similar around here after the last discussion about it. Here's a link to the Frugal Living Challenge. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/38261744#Comment_38261744 Frugaldom (who started it) uses LETS too.
Edit: oops, OliveOyl beat me too it, I am such a slow typist sometimes!

Well this morning is the calm after the storm. It was wild last night and this morning the few leaves that didn't get blown away are barely stirring. Some neighbours rubbish bins got knocked over but that seems to be the extent of the damage; I'm relieved about that. The sun is shining but I think we're set for more rain later.

Have a good day everyone. :)
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Aargh I typed a long post and then I lost it when my internet went down! Gar! Must remember to copy my posts before hitting send, just in case.

    Anyway, gist of it was:

Defrosted diced turkey thigh and not sure what to do with it - thinking maybe a curry done in the slow cooker?

Freezing here but the wind and rain has dropped at least. Had to go out at 6am this morning and it was GRIM then! At home today - more "study leave". Approved Foods delivery (first one ever) coming this afternoon, can barely contain myself! :D

Made a batch of chocolate muffins and flapjacks last night - both recipes came out smaller than stated! 9 muffins instead of 12, and the flapjack mixture only filled about half the recommended tin! Oh well, prob just as well given my tendency to eat when stressed....! :rotfl:

Dehumidifiers can be v useful for reducing condensation and moisture within a house - common at this time of year when you're trying to dry clothes indoors and keep draughts out at the same time. Ours is a Delonghi DEM10, I think we paid about £90 for it a few years ago from Argos - expensive but worth it if you can afford to spend the money.

Right, back to work.....or maybe a cup of tea first to warm me up!

Really sorry to hear about the poorly dads. My dad has a catheter at the moment and an infection that just wont shift despite numerous antibiotics. He is waiting for a prostrate operation. We are now waiting to see if he'll be admitted for intravenous antibiotics, Consultant also seeing about doing the op sooner rathet than later, although they really wanted the infection to be clear.
Hope all the Dads are feeling much better soon.((((( Big hugs for all the worried families and friends))))))).

  • Good morning:)

It is chucking it down here and most of the leaves are off the trees now, as it has been really windy.:(

I feel much better after a nice mug of tea and a bowl of porridge.:)

Got loads to get on with here, washing, unpacking, cleaning etc.:D

Have a good day and to anyone not feeling well, take care.:)

I would never ever move to a house without a coal fire or stove. I hatehateHATE having no fire. I dont mind the holey hearthrug or the bucket of ash at the back door, it's worth it for me. :)

When we were looking at houses before moving here 10 years ago, DS1 (then 5) said he wanted to be near the sea and still have a coal fire (we had one in the old house).

Where are now we are 10 minutes drive from the sea although can hear it as it is actually only 1mile as the crow flies and we have a coal fire, we also live far enough away from the towns that we aren't caught in the hubbub but close enough to do things, although a car is essential, we live on a disused RAF camp.
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
    So we’re empty nesters.
    Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman

A windy day here in Scotland and now the rain has started. Had a good walk this morning with a friend's dog. She's in hospital so I volunteered for dog sitting duties till she returns home. It's good having a dog again but I don't think I'd like the commitment or the expense now that I've retired.

Collecting DGS from school later so will have to think of some activity that keeps us indoors today.
