Memory Foam v Pocket Springs with Foam

Thanks - I have not had a reply from Rest Assured yet so thats useful to know. Can you recommend a make of bed or is that not allowed on the forums? Do you have any knowledge of Harrisons beds? I have seen one today which is 3000 pocket sprung and has a choice of winter/summer cover. It is possible to have the summer cover made on both sides of the mattress, but the bed is very expensive about £1350.00 which is a bit above my budget.Every shop I go in gives me different information about latex - some say avoid all foam as it makes you hotter and some say it makes you cooler!. I have been out today looking at pocket sprung beds without latex but fear that i will never be able to make a decision there is so much choice! Also I would prefer to order from a website as they prices seem much better than the high street stores. I find it very hard to compare as they all use different names for the same/similar matresses. Feel like giving up already.0

I'm afraid I can't recommend anything because I'm in the trade.madcatwoman wrote: »Do you have any knowledge of Harrisons beds?
Harrison were always a good brand. But I don't know if they have been following the trend of all the other big manufacturers, or there have just been a few unlucky customers recently, because I have heard from quite a few people over the last year or so complaing about problems with them. One of those people was posting in a thread on MSE about it.madcatwoman wrote: »I have seen one today which is 3000 pocket sprung and has a choice of winter/summer cover. It seems that manufacturers are running out of ways to make their products stand out from others. So they all seem to be coming out with useless gimmicks as a way of pushing their prices up. A mattress with 3000 springs would most likely be ywo layers of smaller springs. there is actually no benefit in having two small springs on top of each other, over having one full size spring. Or they may have springs within springs. This means that each full size pocket spring has a very small spring within it. Again there is no benefit from this.
More than 800 pocket springs in a mattress is enough to do what pocket springs are designed to do. If a mattress has too many springs, then to fit them all into the mattress, and keep the same firmness, then they have to be very small and weak. And therefore they can get damaged easily. I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800 in a king size mattress.madcatwoman wrote: »Every shop I go in gives me different information about latex - some say avoid all foam as it makes you hotter and some say it makes you cooler!.
Unfortunately it is often the case (especially in the big retail outlets), that many sales staff don't actually know much about the products they sell. So they will make it up as they go along.madcatwoman wrote: »I have been out today looking at pocket sprung beds without latex but fear that i will never be able to make a decision there is so much choice! It is actually a deliberate tactic in retail to confuse customers. This way sales staff will sound very knowledgeable.
The different names for the same products is usually done by the big retailers so that they can have a false price promise, where you can't buy the same model anywhere else.0 -
Thanks again for taking the time to reply. I am now looking at the Romantica Venice/Madrid with the latex on both sides. (Am also looking at Kozeesleep pocket sprung alone). Just would like an opinion on the cooling covers available. Our bedroom is very hot, south facing with big windows and the boiler is in the room below. My husband gets very hot at night and often has to get up because his sleep is disturbed so the coolness of the bed is very important!. We are both sleeping badly and suffering from pressure pain during the night I think because out current mattress is too hard. We both suffer with back/neck ache and wake up feeling awful each morning until we get moving. This will be the most we have ever spent on a bed in the hope that we can get some proper sleep.Just cannot afford to make a mistake.0

There is a company in Whitby N. Yorkshire who do handmade beds (found them when I was searching for mine). It's called Beevers of Whitby,
Tim mentioned that there are a lot of bed manufacturers in Yorkshire but most of them seem to be centred around Batley and Dewsbury and they don't have showrooms. But if all these independent ones are so good, why aren't they in the bed shops, surely they must be able to prove that their beds are better quality and more reasonably priced. Our local bed shop (where I bought mine from) do have 'no name' beds
but none that I had heard of.
Madcatwoman: My local bed shop beat the best price I found on the internet, I just paid a deposit and the balance on delivery.

I think the madrid is memory foam if I remember rightly, I would say a big no, no if your husband suffers from overheating.

They are in bed shops......where do you think they make most of their sales??
There are more than 50 bed manufacturers in the Yorkshire Lancashire area. Most of these are independent, and most still make their beds by hand.0 -

Yes it is memory foam with pocket springs. I would never recommend memory foam to anyone who has serious overheating problems. This is why we were discussing latex foam, which as long as it is natural, and is deep enough, then it is far cooler.0 -

I will avoid the Madrid then - so much information to compute! no wonder I get confused. From reading on the websites I beleive the Venice does only use natural latex and it is 2" deep. What about the cool or climate control covers - does anyone have experience of using these and which one would they recommend.0 -
Only have experience of sleeping on a coolmax (on memory foam) cover, in one word !!!!.

Coolmax is just a wicking fabric, that takes the moisture away from your body, and prevents you feeling too clammy. Personally in a mattress I would worry about where it takes that moisture to. It is really designed for outdoor clothing where the moisture can then evaporate.
Climasmart and Outlast actually help to stabilise the temperature. In shops they would probably say that it keeps you warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The truth is that it helps to keep the temperature the same the whole time. However it is a fabric, and not an air conditioning unit, so it can only do so much., but many people do think they work. I haven't tried it because it wasn't available on my mattress when I bought it (although it is now).0
