Birdlady,
I'm heavily into genealogy (back to the 1600s on several lines now!) so can probably point you in the direction of some useful stuff. Probably best if you PM me. Let me know how far back you've got, and what part of the country (or which country) your family came from as that will help.0 -
Greyfox, thank you, I haven't started at all yet in fact the idea only came into my head today. I was just wondering the best place to start for the Manchester/Lancashire area. Some of it is more like tracing people alive now (3 possible half brothers),

Just catching up as per usual
Boddy, I know this is probably too late but I wanted to let you know that my thoughts are with you. Having lost my Mum last year I understand your loss and the need to do something to try to cope with it. May your Mum's spirit soar and wishing you all the strength and love that you need to see you through.
Will reply to other posts as I work my way through them all. Some days there aren't any trumpets, just lots of dragons. Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow -- Mary Anne Radmacher0 -
Birdlady,
Will PM you later this evening0 -
Bitsy Beans - did the mums know you were going to be there - in all possibilty they didn't have any cash to spend with them - I know I never used to take anything with me when my children were small as then i couldn't be tempted into stopping at the shops on the way home. If I knew someone would be there selling stuff though, I would alwyas take some cash to buy something - flyers, posters etc are a great idea for the playgroups to give out beforehand
To be fair no they didn't. Even the play group organisers didn't LOL!
But on the flip side it was a <ahem> more afflluent section of the borough so I didn't expect many of them to be cash freeI have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks
All will be well in the end. If it's not well, it's not the end.Be humble for you are made of earth. Be noble for you are made of stars0 -

Me too! Heavily into genealogy! The rough system of doing things is to investigate and document what you've already got. Start with yourself, and go backwards, adding in the sideways stuff at the time - i.e. you, the sideways stuff is brothers, sisters, cousins if you want. Your mum and dad, the sideways stuff is aunts and uncles. You want dates for births, marriages, and deaths, and certificates if possible, because they give you more information.
Talk to relatives first - fill in on the detail of their lives. I started doing it in the late 1960s, and the oral memories I collected at that time are invaluable - those people would be well over 100 years old by now, and life was *so* different, the simplest things matter - like, with my mum, who's still alive, she remembers getting electricity, so how did she cope with a candle when she went to bed on her own aged 7? What did they eat for Christmas lunch and where did they buy it?
Then its tracing back - your first port of call is your reference library, locally and nationally. My family trek started out in Liverpool, but spread to Salford, Yorkshire, Northamptonshire, Wales, Ireland (many times!) Scotland, northern France.
There's a thread on here about doing it cheaply, I'll find it and come back.
Hope this helps!2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

Could I ask for your positive vibes and support tomorrow?
I sadly have to take my teenage daughter to her friend's funeral, and am absolutely dreading it. Please send positive vibes late morning tomorrow to help me to help my daughter and especially the girl's family through this awful timeIs it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches :think:Loves being a Wonderbra friend :kisses3:
