  • Don't know if it's of any use, but I came across quite a few women in business networking groups when doing MG's spreadsheet thing for her courses... just by googling 'networking' and city name. Some were free, and all provided support to women setting up/running businesses - might any of those be any use to you Ruby?

There were a couple of networking groups kind of like the matrix - they had different 'chapters' of about 8 people, within those nobody was in direct competition for business, they met to socialise and discuss solutions to problems etc, and all carried the business cards of the people in their chapter to pass out to others they met who they thought might be useful :j Do you know I never even realised such things existed??! :o

Books do furnish a room :rotfl:

However - have decided that I am never going to set up to sell the ones I don't want - so will take some every time I go into town and drop off at the charity book shop.
And tomorrow (if I can't get through on the phone today) will go into BHF furniture shop and arrange uplift for the trolley I have finally admitted I do not have a space for plus some more bits and pieces.

I know you'll shriek at this, but I would probably take the spines off and attach them to panels and mount them on the wall in what would appear to be recessed bookshelves. Then when I felt the need I could run my finger along them and remember the pleasure each book gave me. Plus you get the furnishing effect.

Ok, ok, I'm getting my coat. Or is it my jacket...

Oh, MG, you poor lamb. When I read your post last night I immediately thought "migraine". I used to be plagued with them - 2 or 3 a month on average (but - whispering as I don't want to temp Fate -have only had two since I retired a couple of years ago and stopped working under strip lighting) so know just how rough you've been feeling. Try to take it easy this evening. I'm sure people will understand if they have to wait another day for their log-in details.

Mine are triggered by some low energy bulbs, some LEDs and the plasma telly flickering. And diet fizzy drinks. And bright flashes or reflections of sunlight.

    I'm a bit of a state really!

But knowing they're triggers is helpful.

  • Why would you not want to be close to all those lovely drugs? I've never had a baby, nor do I ever want one really, but I honestly cannot comprehend why someone would choose to want to be in agony for so bloody long by choice!!!

Now if it was an unfortunate situation where it all happened a bit early in a place cut of from civilisation and you had to scream your way through it, that'd be different.

But... why would you volunteer for it?

Some good points re your books Marru - but I can understand why you would rather move them then sell them gradually to maximise the income. Of course, the question is, WILL you sell them, or will you prevaricate and leave them gathering dust? ;) If the latter, then is this the universe giving you a kick?

As for the house - clearly you weren't meant to live there, although the timing is a bit of a pain. I agree with the comment above about trying to negotiate rent on the one that is currently too expensive - even if it gave you a short term fix for 6 months at least that would give you time to find the right place.

Marru - On the last move we knew we were going to be in store for minimum 6 months, the storage costs were per square metre, it actually became a simple exercise to work out what was worth storing and what wasn't. Most white goods etc were worth selling cheaply rather than storing.

Might it be worth doing a costing on the books, with extra removal costs, and if they are restricting where you can rent, rental costs etc.. It might be cost effective to take a short term financial hit now, rather than pay more over a longer period of time.

Edit - just spotted that you might be going into store, do price up the cost of storing the books.

*puts fingers in her ears and sings - la la la laaaa, I can't hear you*

Ok, yes I can hear you loud and clear. Yes it would make more sense, yes I have been sitting on them for a very long time. But I haven't been well and now I am. (That is my story and I am sticking with it :o)

If I sell them now as a job lot I am hard pushed to get £100 it would probably be closer to £50. To move them I need to make an extra trip costing around £50.- in van hire plus diesel for 200 miles. Also additional storage would cost around £25 for two weeks. However if I can sell them individually and get 50p average per book I will make £2,500. Even with 20p average I would make £1,000. And actually I don't know how many books there is :o, could be more as I have added what used to be my personal collection into the pile.

I am now first in line for a property that should be available mid November. I am waiting to hear tomorrow when exactly and depending on the answer will set plan b in action. I might end up living on a house boat for couple of weeks.

I need to increase/diversify the way I provide antenatal classes. We are quite saturated with educators in the area where I live but elsewhere there are very few available to support women who desperately need support. I can and have provide one to one sessions by phone and by email - does anyone have any idea how or where I could advertise this service to increase number of clients? This way of working particularly suits women who are in a subsequent pregnancy.

Mumsnet, Emma's Diary (sites like these,)
local maternity hospitals usually have a notice board in the ante-natal department

Set up a facebook group, get people to like the page and spread the word, I've got 5 preggers people in my friends list.
Just a point - a lot of pregnant teenagers wouldnt consider even going to antenatal classes. My daughter was 19, and totally poo-pooed the idea (wished she'd listened when in labour though lol).
But doing it online might be something that would appeal.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: First one came 6 weeks early in 70 minutes. Second one spot on and the Midwife lived on the next hill - so was with me in 40 mins, 3 contractions and catch:eek:

I factored that 30 minutes for the ambulance to find us - and 10 mnutes to get me on board 0 then 30 minutes to get to Dundee.

Well the baby would by my calculations have been born going around the 5-ways roundabout.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Nah, rather stay safe and warm in my bed than screamng hrough the night wth a blue flasher. Midwife did make tea and breakfast before she went - and DS1 got to cut the cord ........ although to hear him tell the story he was the one that brought his wee brother into the world.:D
