Thanks GR, I remember those strips from years ago, my mum used to hang them in the kitchen, but I've not seen them for sale.

But do you think that this would attract more flies? I used to think we had more buzzing around when it was haning there.

We once saw a film being done and the outside caterers put a jar of honey & water on a table away from the van to attract the wasps etc away from the food, but although we had eaten our food close by we hadn't as many wasps flying around until they put that jar there.

    Hi

I always have pots of Basil growing in the kitchen and it seems to keep the flies away. Flies don't like Basil, supposedly they don't like Mint either but Mint never seemed to work for me.

    Hope this helps

We have a bamboo fly-curtain / screen on the kitchen door for when it's open. That cuts down quite a few of the flying pests.

Also make sure we have clean surfaces and floors so there's nothing to attract the flies in.

We cover the cats' food when they're not eating it so that that doesn't attract any flies.

Don't get many flies but the odd one does slip through. We deal with that by swatting it with rolled up newspaper.

Used to get more when the dairy farm next door was active. Lots of horse-type flies. Can you have cow-flies? Because there were a lot. Must have been all that slurry they left around. :(
    Where now?

We use hair spray or deodorant for the flying nasties. (We've aquired a wasps nest in the tree outside). It sticks their wings together (not a nice thought I know) so you can chuck them outside - they may or may not recover from that!

As for other things - I've managed to get green fly on my mint cuttings indoors (trying to grow roots!)

So I found some info on making a nettle insecticide. Quite simple, get a load of nettles (yep the stinging type), put in a bucket or large bowl in water and leave some where warm (in this weather - outside is fine). After a week you can strain - keep the water for your spray, the nitrates in the water will kill those bugs (aphips, green fly etc), and you can put the left over - now soggy - nettle leaves in your composter and they'll speed up the composting too - so a bit of a bonus their!

    Hope this is useful

  • I was having the same problem. Having Cat litter hanging around doesn't help much. I went the the cheapie shop and bought one of those old fashioned door coverings, the one where there are strips of multi coloured plastic. This has helped considerable and cost me just a pound, it means I can have my door open all day in the hot weather. It might be worth having a think as to whether there may be something attracting them ...;)

squirt them with a household cleaner so they cant fly the tread on them, beats smelly air fresherners and you should see how quick they drop.

I use the fly papers in a part of the kitchen where it isn't likely to hit anyone on the head, I wouldn't say we've had extra flies because of it and it certainly does work at catching them.
