Getting rid of flies

  • Really hope someone can help me with this, although not the most pleasant of subjects...

Last week we had a bird get into our chimney, obviously the poor thing has died now as it couldn't get out, but when I got home at 4:30 this afternoon, there were about 20 smallish flies on the window of the front room. I managed to get rid of most of them with the aid of a newspaper, but I've just gone in there again and there were about another 20 - obviously they are coming from the chimney (not quite sure how they are getting out of the chimney - I think our gas fire is pretty sealed up around the edges and top etc)

Does anyone have any way to get rid of them, other than squashing (because then I have to clean the windows!) because they must be so bacteria laden, and they are annoying as well. I feel all itchy thinking about it!!!

    Thanks in advance!

I think you are going to have to get the bird out otherwise flies are going to keep laying their eggs on it - yuk. You will have to get it swept I think.

Unfortunately that would involve ripping out the entire gas fire, and the tile surround etc etc... I gave the very same suggestion to my parents!

    Hi naughty,

I agree........the only way to get rid of the flies once and for all is to have your chimney swept. Not a very moneysaving suggestion, but I think it would money well spent.

I have got gas fires on both of my chimneys but they still have to be swept. The sweeps go up on the roof and do it from there although it costs more. If you don't do it you will be overrun with flies and maggots.

I have had the same sort of problem with flies, but I havent been able to find where they are coming from. I thought the cat had dragged something into my side entry as there was a horrible smell and a plethora of flies, but I cannot find anything anywhere. Ive put it down to the cat food attracting them.

I have a fly paper up in my kitchen which has about 20 blue bottles on it and thought about getting one of those electric zapper things you see in chip shops.

Ive just ordered myself a venus fly trap of ebay! Should be interesting!

  • Thanks for help so far - will let mum read suggestions later.

We have temporarily solved the problem by putting a bag over the fireplace and taped it up, but obviously something else will have to be done - the entire fireplace surround is marble, so no question of it coming out.

Will mention it being swept from the top, then maybe they could put wire over the chimney tops as well - this has happened before.

Find yourself a small child and send them up there with a broom.

    It's character building.
