Thanks for help so far - will let mum read suggestions later.

We have temporarily solved the problem by putting a bag over the fireplace and taped it up, but obviously something else will have to be done - the entire fireplace surround is marble, so no question of it coming out.

Will mention it being swept from the top, then maybe they could put wire over the chimney tops as well - this has happened before.

We've had an infestation of flies, as the 2 not-so-nearby chicken farms had a clean out a couple of weeks ago. It's affected 2 villages and is quite simply minging!!! We've got those hangy things that they stick to, fly spray is rubbish and a waste of money - they just DON'T DIE!!! There's sticky sunflower things that go on windows that help for normal amounts of flies! As we live in the country, I had a dead rat under my floor boards last year, I had to cut them up to get it out - nasty but got rid of the flies!!
Sounds like chimney sweeping from the top is your only option.

1 more thing - if you get a wire grid put on top of the chimney, make sure it's attached properly - our jackdaws managed to prize ours off and made a nest, flipping chicks kept me awake for weeks!!!

    Good luck :-)

  • Hi
I had a dead bird behind the fireplace and had flies around all of the time.
You will have to get the bird out because your health could be affected with all the flies.
I had my fire taken out got rid of the bird and the environmental health sprayed behind the fire to stop the flies I had to pay for this. Then I had my chimney swept.
The flies won't go anyway until you get the bird out.
I do feel sorry for you, I had my chimney blocked off and had a gas vent on my chimney to make sure no more birds would nest in my chimney.
    Good luck

    Hiya,

I have too many flies buzzing around my kitchen at the moment .. they're driving me to distraction.

There is no food left out.
The work surfaces are kept clean.

We have mint growing by the back door and a big pot of lavender.

Any OS ways to keep the blasted flies out of the kitchen ??

    Please please please !

  • For some reason we seem to have got loads of flies around our kitchen window. Even when we haven't had any windows open they keep appearing. We have used fly spray on some but even after we've cleared away all the sprayed ones we come back later to find more flies both dead and alive. It's probably been about a dozen a day over the last three days.

I really want to solve the problem firstly because it's unhygienic to have loads of flies in the kitchen and secondly we are going away on Saturday and don't want to come back to a plague of flies in the kitchen.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Try a Venus fly trap. We go one for our kitchen window sill and don't have any problem now.

Is there anything attracting them like something going off in a drain or a dead animal or something?

  • There's no bad smells or any food left out and they seem to cluster towards the window so I can't see any reason for them.

I have been invaded with flies and i have no idea why, they are really bugging me, they are worse then the crane flies we had a few weeks ago.

Does anyone know how to get rid of them?
