No, but I'd love to know as I'm having the same problem. I've got a compost bin at the end of our not-very-long garden and that is full of flies. I am sure they are the same kind that I'm finding in the house. I wish it would get really cold and kill the b*****s off.

Citronella oil? Some shops sell blocks of citronella.

I also have a window thing that looks like a sunflower stained glass. It's supposed to attracty the flies, they get poisoned and then die on my windowsill. I know it works because of the number of fly corpses on the windowsill, but I still had lots of flies buzzing around.

In the end I'm afraid I kept a can of fly spray in the living room and just grabbed it and squirted every time I heard a fly.

They sound like the ones I've got. They're not big buzzing ones, they drift about in a very stupid fashion.

I'd be worried that there's a source inside the home. Do you have pet bowls near a cupboard or somewhere where food could have gone and then flies laid eggs on it? It might be worth checking behind cupboards and things if you do have pets.

Are they tiny? They sound like fruit flies. If so the chances are that they came in egg form on some fruit that you bought. Where do you keep peelings and so on before you take them to the compost heap? They could be breeding there, especially if you don't keep it covered. My advice would be to wash all fruit brought into the house, and keep anything destined for the compost bin covered up whilst it is still in the house. Since i started doing this we have had only the odd tiny fly, but boy are they hard to swat

The other possibility is fungus flies that live in soil-less potting compost, if you have any pot plants in the house. I cannot remember the name, but there is a product that can be watered onto the compost that kills them. I don't think it can be used on edible plants, but this is the wrong time of year for most of those anyway.
