can you wait for them to go out then lean over the fence lift the lid and spray the bin with fly killer. This should kill the maggots aswell.
lol i would need a ladder to do this i'm only 5ft 2 and the fence is 6ft, the fly papers my son got yesterday from 24hr garage say they can be used both inside and out so i have hung a couple on our side of the fence and attatched one across the top of the fence and this has caught lots of flies this morning:T:T:j:j

  • Dog poo in the back garden is one of the worst fly attractants - We have a very old and not very well dog and sometimes he can't wait for his walks and goes in the back garden. It's amazing how many flies and bluebottles land on it within seconds of him doing it. I clean it up straight away and never put it in our bins but wrap it in plastic bag and take it to the nearest waste bin on the road. I spray my wheelie bin inside and out with flykiller every day and get it professionally cleaned every month. The fly curtains from aldi are great. I wipe my window surrounds with tea tree oil too.

Please move if this is in the wrong place.

Has anyone got any tips for getting rid of flies, or even preventing them coming in the first place. They are driving me nuts. Spray can nearly empty and wondering if there was a cheaper/greener alternative to a new can?

They don't like the smell of basil plants, but I find that just hanging basil up in the window or standing a plant on a windowsill doesn't have any effect. However, I've found that when I'm in the kitchen, if I keep squeezing the basil plant now & again, the flies do tend to fling themselves against the window in an attempt to find the quickest way out.
Citronella candles can be good at keeping bitey things like mosquitoes away, but in my experience, the only ones that have ever made much difference are the ones in bright yellow glass pots from garden centres. very strong citronella smell. Label said just outdoor use only but we have burned them on indoor windowsills in summer & the number of horrible bitey mosquitoes in the room has massively reduced.

You're not the only one! I'm being pestered by them and am getting concerned over leaving Daisy Cats wet food out, what with the flies crawling over it,so I'm throwing it out save she get sick.

Walking through the garden centre today, we spotted a fine display of pitcher plants and venus fly traps. I've never tried buying or growing any but there seem to be quite a lot of websites around that deal in them eg http://www.easycarnivores.co.uk/shop/home.php?cat= seems to have lots of useful info.

Try this http://www.redtopflycatcher.co.uk/ At £9.99 it's not the cheapest solution, but it works. It lasts for twelve weeks so will take you right through a typical summer. Hope this helps.
