    <snip> :( I sucked a lot of them up the Dyson :T

If you do that, remember to empty it soon afterwards, or they will breed inside and fly or crawl out when you open it up to empty it weeks later. Ask me how I know!

I found a 'fly killer pen' a few years ago (probably in Wilkos), which works reasonably well. It contains a contact fly killer, so you draw lines of it on windows and other such places where they congregate. I usually only use it on the kitchen window, so we get flies when the other windows are open, but a lot less because if they touch the kitchen window they die. Only needs reapplying a couple of times through the summer, or after you clean your windows.
I think it is safe for children and pets, though you would have to read the box to make sure.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

How spooky to find this thread when just today i've been to wilkinsons & dunelm, bought some extending tension rods, and some curtains (both for the windows and the patio doors) and have put them all up in the conservatory - why ............. because my dog is having panic attacks everytime a fly comes in the house! Well pleased with the door curtains - bought 81" long net curtains 2 lots the width of my door so that they meet in the middle and i can just part them in the middle to walk through - i have 3 dogs and they're fine with them. But i agree about the fly papers, i remember as a kid thinking how digusting they looked in my aunties house but they are the most effective and cheap method - wilkinsons do them - just make sure you put them somewhere you're not going to catch your hair in them!!!
A home is not a home ..... without a dog

Do you have a 99p store in your area?

I bought some fly screen netting from there for the kitchen window, it took me 10 mins from start to finish if that to fit it.

You can get either black or white and it comes with a roll of sticky backed velcro which you stick around your window. Cut out a rectangular piece of net the same size as your top window frame and then press it down all around the window, it will just stick to the velcro.

You just lift the net when you want to open/close the window and press it back down again to keep the flies out.

Also, if you have a B & M store they sell those coloured door strips that keep the flies out of the kitchen for £1.99.

many thanks for your speedy replies, do the electric bug zappers(the ones with the blue light) have to be placed at a certain height ? I will look into door and window screens as can't spend all summer with the windows and doors closed. How would these work with dogs and door or kids running through?. Son has just been to our 24hr garage and bought some sticky fly strips ,as disgusting as they sound and indeed look i will use them till something more plesant looking comes along.Anything has got to be better than the dam flies

Just to let you know the fly screens from aldi are lovely! My mum bought them a couple weeks back. We have sooo much trouble with flies too, they send us mad! We have 9 dogs so unless we constantly go outside to pick they're poo up (which i'm now thinking is quite possibly why they decide to linger in our house!) the flies target our house! haha! Anyway in aldi they're something like 3.99... REALLLLYYY cheap! I remember mum buying some locally and they cost her something like 17 quid and they broke when our dogs went through them! I'd deffo think about getting fly screen nets if i were you, they've saved us from going crazy! :)

I find that we have a lot more flies this year -I think it is because of all the hot weather .You can spray with a weak solution of vinegar and that keeps them out .

I find growing lavender in pots either side of the kitchen door has helped to keep flies at bay.

Spiders work too!! I can't quite reach the eaves in our conservatory without getting the steps out and there is a spider which lurks there. He does a good job on any flies that do get in!!

Pound shops sell fly swats 2 for £1. They are quite satisfying to use and much more effective than a rolled up newspaper.

As a matter of interest, what colour are your walls? Flies are definitely more attracted to yellow walls than blue
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Hi All , have been inundated with flies since the warm weather has arrived.I am presuming its to do with the temp of my house as i know its not dirty.,they are really getting me down now, don't want to use fly spray as daughter has asthma , short of keeping all windows and doors shut all of the time :( has anyone got any ideas of how to keep them at bay?

Citronella oil is supposed to deter them (and the candles).

Aldi currently have fly screens for £3.50 - we've got one on our kitchen door and they work a treat.

Aldi also have the bug zappers for around £5 which my mum has and that is also working. You just hang it in the darkest corner of the room (presumably so that the flies can see it more easily) and they fly towards the pretty blue light.

    Hope that helps ;)

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.

regarding dog bed and bowl , nope these are clean and surrounding areas also, kids not allowed to take food and drinks out of the kitchen had the rule for the past 17 years don't think they would break it.As for the neighbours lol yes i've seen them they also have a dog which is allowed to use the garden as a toilet as doesn't get walked and their wheelie bins are against the fence that divides our gardens. So that could well be the problem .Don't really fancy mentioning it to them as could "backfire "on me .

can you wait for them to go out then lean over the fence lift the lid and spray the bin with fly killer. This should kill the maggots aswell.

Hi my hallway which runs from front to back door is a yellow colour so a pot of paint might be in order there, lounge and kitchen are cream and blue and light green, don't for some reason get them upstairs ,all the bedroom doors stay closed and landing is dark throughout the day.
