In Italy they keep basil on the windowsills. I also heard years ago that wiping surfaces down with water & lemon juice works. In Scotland today we have a good old fashioned deterrent - a gale force wind!0

aye, all my doors and windows are rattling like mad up here. God, you canny beat the scottish summer eh ...:(0

I tried having a basil plant on the window sill one year.......didn't make any difference to the wretched things.
So,I bought a fly catcher plant, one of the tall stemmed pitcher ones. That worked after a fashion but not brilliant
Now we resort to a fly swat and those plastic sticky strips............yuk ! Hate them but they do seem to work once the flies come in..........just need something stop them coming in in the first placeMary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

I'm sure I read somewhere that some herbs deter them if you put them on the windowsills - does anyone know which ones - or of any other methods? Many thanks
My MIL recommends southernwood (AKA lad's love).
I'll add this to the existing "flies" thread to keep all ideas together.
