Hi Lelc,
There's an older thread with lots of ideas that should help so I've added your post to it to keep all the suggestions together.

Am I glad I saw this thread. It's winter now but the flies still keep coming. We live in the countryside and I really do not know where these things are coming from. We have eliminated the fact there is a dead mouse or dead anything come to that as there isn't any smells, the house is clean and rubbish from kitchen bin removed daily.
No sooner than I hoover them up dead or alive! they come back again. I'm not talking one or two but twenty or so at one window!! It's like they are coming through the gaps in the window, is that possible? I've put an electronic blue light thingy on and that didn't do much, so now I have this fly killer stuff (a bit like an air freshener gel block) from Rentokil but they are still around. Some days they come in their droves, other days you won't see one.
It's really weird as I thought flies were only around in the summer. Today I got rid of a large wasp in the house. Strange!0 -
Good to see you back Kim!0

Well I've tried the cider/vinegar thing but to no avail. I've lost about a glass of wine trying to swat the damn things as they seem to go for my head just as I'm taking a swig. My dh's theory is that if we drink lots of wine then we'll not care about the flies!! I've killed about 5 of them tonight but now they've doubled in numbers.
What's worse is I live in the Highlands of Scotland and it's been minus degrees almost every night and yet they keep coming.
It was quite funny earlier though as my dd swatted one of the bigger flies in mid flight only for it to fall into the hood of her hoodie - seeing one 17 year old dd running around the room screaming "get it out" .........priceless!!:rotfl: :rotfl:

We get 'visitors' like this in the warmer weather..............tried basil on the window sill -that didn't seem to work. Hate those sprays so we got the old fashioned sticky fly strips and dotted them around..........they look awful though, hanging there with all the dead flies on, still they worked and that was the main thing. We did get a 'fly catcher' plant one year ..........it worked up to a point but not as well as I thought it would, then it died anyway so that was that !
We also got a couple of fly swats..............easier to get at them than a rolled up newspaper (my Mums favourite method).
Hadn't thought of hoovering them up except once I've swatted them..........thats worth remembering. Bound to be plagued again this year.
Glad I saw this thread, thanks:jMary

My Mum used to get 4-5 flies in her bathroom. kill them and another 4-5 will turn up a few days later. So we started to make sure the window was kept shut. Door closed. Didn't help. PLUGHOLE!! Cover. didn't help. Surely not coming up from between the floorboards? Found out our neighbour had a similar problem, seem to think they live in the cavities of the house. Semi solution was to lay floor tiles down. Seems to have worked so far... )Sealed Pot Challenge 15 #78

Hi everyone
With the wonderful weather comes the flies and I'm looking for any suggestions of old style ways of dealing with these winged critters. Any ideas that allow me to open the windows for more than 5 mins at a time would be great.
Thanks

In some Mediterranean countries they grow basil in pots on the windowsill to keep flies away. Not sure if it works, but at least you'd still have the basil for cooking!0

Venus fly traps??
Edit:Oh yes and flies dont like citrus smells, so maybe essential oils. Or burn a citronella candle? The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -
