Fireworks

  • Personally, I really enjoy being able to have my own fireworks in my garden, and I wouldn't support a ban. Yes, some shops could do with being stricter on the age limits, but why let a few idiots spoil it for those of us who know how to use the things responsibly?
Even with fireworks being legal people buy cheaper black-market/"fell off the lorry" ones that are not safety-tested and therefore far more dangerous than the usual sort, I'd imagine that a ban would make this more common.

It would increase in the face of a ban where people get unknown origin import fireworks and set them off risking injury to themselves or spectators or damage nearby property.

Well why should people have to go to displays because idiots misuse them? I have no probs with people setting off at home properly(this shouldn't be stopped),and if you ban the sale of fireworks people will still get them via blackmarket traders albeit more dangerous and more lethal that can kill and burn users and spectators-do you want that on your conscience knowing full well what can happen if this was to go ahead? I'll bet so.

Why do some people try to cause trouble? I gave my opinion and now you're saying I should fee guilty about it? Get real.

I don't have a problem with people using them in their garden but the truth is so many people misuse them.

Why should innocent people have their pets maimed and have to pay for the NHS to treat those injured through their own stupid fault?

And if somebody is injured for misusing a firework that doesn't play on my conscience - serves them right

My thoughts exactly wilykit. Don't feel guilty about looking out for your dog, you are only being a responsible dog owner.

And I couldn't agree more that if any idiots mess with fireworks to the extent that they misuse them...yeah, it does serve them right!!

My mum used to add a few drops of Bachs Rescue Remedy to our lab's dinner it didn't work 100% but did stop him trying to hide in wardrobes!

I believe you can get them alcohol free especially for pets these days.

    YDSM

We give this to our Boxer, and to my sisters Staffy ( who is absolutely petrified of the bangs) and it seems to help.

Also feeding them something stodgy a couple of hours before hand is recommended. Mashed potato or pasta is good. Don't forget to build them a safe place to go hide if they need it, lining it with blankets, a jumper of yours if need be.. under the bed is alway a favoured place! Keep your curtains closed to keep out the light and to help baffle the noise slightly. Take them out for a walk wellbefore it gets dark, and let them out for a wee before the firework 'times'... then take them out into the garden late at night but keep them supervised in case they bolt.

People who have fireworks in their back gardens should givce consideration to immediate neighbours and inform them in advance of when they are going to let them off. We back onto a primary school who have an organised display every year. We know when it is going to happen, and take the necessary steps.. but its when a neighbours decide to let off a back garden version of Disneys fireworks.. i think a little consideration and a lot of forewarning should happen - but it doesnt, and i think that is terribly selfish.

Re the banning of fireworks - I personally think that there needs to be tighter restrictions on the sale of such items. We get the little runts setting them off during the day let alone at night.

Won't work for every dog, but I sat outside with mine when fireworks were being let off- sat on the back step with my arm around them and talked to them. Collie shook like a leaf initially, but is fine now. Lab just got furious at the annoying things in the sky she couldn't play with.... :)
Hope your dog's alright in the next few weeks!

I recently adopted a rescue dog who is generally quite anxious. He is having behaviour therapy and we have bought him a Thundershirt.

The problem at the moment is fireworks. Has anyone found something which really works to calm their dogs down? I am loathe to give him sedatives but judging by his reaction this evening I may have to. :(

I have a dog who is a nerveous wreck this time of year, this is what I do and it seems to work.
take them a good walk before it gets dark 4.30/5.00.
if they do hear a firework go off they may jump up and try and hide, dont run after them and try and calm them down just ignore them.
i know it is hard not to do this but fussing them will make them worse. perhaps move a sofa or chair so if they do try and hide they will have somewhere to go, or let them go upstairs under the bed.
you could also try giving them half an asprin, this was recommended to me by my vet and it works. my dog becomes very relaxed after doing this.
