yes, very soon it will be costing you as much as Electrically Heated households.

I noticed second hand oil storage tanks going for as little as £80 - £100 on Bay of 'E', one recently went for £50 if you could collect.

Now might be the time, i(f you have the space), to buy an additional storage tank and fill this in reserve whilst the price is still below 60p a litre.

I wouldn't believe too much in that rag they've got the basic facts wrong for a start we're not in El Nino we're still in a La Nina phase and it's expected to strengthen if anything El nino is not on the cards until at least next year.

As for the £1 litre I can see if going high but I can't see it hitting that high, having said that it always pays to be prepared, just had our tank filled 767 litres to fill it back up.

quite pleased really in 13 months we'd only used that 767 litres out of the 1000 in the tank so not bad at all comparable to about £36 a month and we use the oil for all our hot water all year round too.

Really? You must live in a 1 bed hobbit hole!! :)
So what temp do you set your thermostat at in the house? And what type of house do you have? I guess it is very well insulated?

My big old steel tank started leaking badly two winters ago and I bought a 2nd hand plastic tank which holds only 1100 litres. If I bought another tank, would it need its own separate run of piping to the boiler - the newer tank is much further from the boiler than the old one, and had to have a tigerloop - or would it branch into the existing pipework with a tap, or some means of selecting which tank was in use?

Why not place them side by side and link the two tanks together? Preferably camaflaged so your huge stockpile of oil doesn't get nicked!
  • Linked in the same way as my water butts? The tank is bunded, would that work?

Unfortunately the plastic tank sits prominently on the patio, though I'm not convinced the advice my boiler man gave me re siting it according to current regulations was accurate. Still, I can't afford to resite it now. I'll have to surround it with planters!
  • I'm just about to buy 500 litres of heating oil. The cheapest I have found so far is Chandlers at £303. I live near Lincoln, Uk. Can anyone suggest any other companies to try or do you think Chandlers are the cheapest?

    Any help appreciated :-)

    Hello Claire,

I have just joined the forum and saw your post. I use Watson Petroleum from their depot in Louth. Been with them about 12 years and have found that they will match a quote from any other supplier. I also pay monthly by direct debit to ease the pain but if your account goes into credit, they pay 4% interest on the balance!!!

I have also just invested in a Scan Andersen wood burning stove and it's fantastic:j Should cut my oil consumption by half as I have a number of trees that are "in the way" !!!
