Sorry last post was a bit negative.
We have had a bit of a chat and decided to put anything we recognise to one side then split the things into four piles. When that is done we will sell the rest at a table top sale in aid of Dad's favourite charity. Then everyone gets something and some good comes of the rest of the items.

The things life throws at us :)

  • You didn't come across as negative. It is hard to keep everyone happy, especially when emotions are raw, but it's great that you have all come to a compromise. I hope it hasn't been to hard for you Xx

Brilliant news about Barclays mortgage, charges refund and Mr P being paid :j.

Thank you for your kind thoughts plmbl, brizzled and pinot.

Things have become increasingly difficult here. Mr P has been diagnosed with depression again and signed off work for three weeks. I suppose I at least know he won't be working for the next three weeks so can stop asking him what he has planned next.
He won't go out socially or to shops but has been happy to drive me and DSs around. DS1's car needs the brakes sorting. They (DS1 and DS3) tried to change the brake pads and now the breaks are very spongy!!

DS1 has left to go to his GF in Florida, DS2 is coming home tomorrow and DS2 is working to pay his car insurance and rent on his room in his house. Where he doesn't live!! But has a contract for a year. He decided he wanted to be here with us and has slept one night in his rented room.

We are in a pretty diffficult situation. The holiday cottage is looking after itself financially and will be okay if the people who booked for January pay us in advance.Fingers crossed on that one.

Our situation is different. We have enough money to pay all the bills minus £200. Not sure what will have to go this month. I will have a trawl through the direct debits again.

All is not lost for the festive period. DD and DB have bought us some special food for Christmas. We have three Christmas cakes :D I bought one weeks ago and now have two as gifts. I will be able to give one away to someone in need but food bank will only take none perishables.

ETA I forgot to say that we have managed to distribute my father's effects to family members, into boxes for them. Three are parcelled up ready to go to OZ. Just need to find a very cheap way to send them away. My sister says to keep hers until we next see her which may be a long way off but she doesn't mind waiting.

The process of sorting and speaking to people about items has been very harrowing and I have left all my MSE friends forums go for a while as I didn't feel up to actually posting without making me keyboard very wet> Feeling a lot stronger now despite Mr P's illness.

Hello Pooh, I'm really sorry things are so difficult right now x

Have you checked if you are entitled to any benefits while Mr Pooh is off work?

If you explain the situation to your brother in Oz, hopefully he will pay for the postage costs to send the items, or if not maybe you could tell him it will just have to wait until things pick up a bit.

I hope this doesn't sound insensitive, but if any of the items you've sorted are of any value, then rather than give the proceeds to charity I'm sure your father would have preferred YOU to keep your portion to help you through a difficult time.

Has DS2 looked into sub-letting his room if he's going to be with you for a while?

Remember that christmas cakes keep for months, so why not just hang on to them. Who cares if you're eating Christmas cake in April - it's still gorgeous and nutritious!
