    Hi All
My daughter has just announced that she would like to visit her granny next week and I have been trying to find cheaper than the standard £75 return (she has a railcard). The journey is Newcastle to Banbury on 11th June any time after 9am and return on 13th June to be back in Newcastle at about 8pm. I have tried splitting at Derby and York and it does not seem to be any cheaper. If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.
    Regards
    Wendy

Have you tried looking at splitting at Carlisle? This is a slightly longer route but may be cheaper.

Also try splitting at Manchester, will take a little longer but again may be cheaper (book the Newcastle - Manchester portion using the TransPennine Express Student Promo link)

In both cases this will avoid the route via Derby which can be quite expensive.
  • Hi there, I was hoping somebody could advise me on a bit of confusion the anytime day return prices are causing me for Derby to Uttoxeter.

I need to get the 8.40am train from Derby, arriving at Uttoxeter at 9.05am this Thursday (14th). I need to return later that evening sometime after 6.00pm.

Looking at the prices, there are two Anytime Day Return tickets available, one priced at £5.20 and the other £7.90 (with young persons railcard discount). The only difference is that you cannot select the 8.40AM train under the cheaper ticket. However, the terms and conditions (which are identical to the more expensive ticket) clearly state that the ticket is valid on any route throughout the whole day.

So does anyone know why it wont let me select the 8.40AM train with the cheaper ticket? And do you think i would be able to just select a later train with the cheaper ticket, and still just catch the 8.40AM one without any problems? When i have bought day returns in the past it has always been on the day, and so i havent even had to select what train i am going to get.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can give

there seems so many train companies around, Im lost:eek:

can anyone advise me on where I might find the cheapest way of travelling from manchester to skegness on 25th june morning, returning 29th june after lunch, for 2 adults and a 2 year old..

I have always travelled direct by national express but now there isnt a direct coach from Oldham, meaning it takes longer and the price has shot up too, also I have been told I have to pay half price for my 2 year old, since when were under 4 not free? :p

thank you in advance for any advise x

The difference is that you cannot get a discount before 10am with a YP railcard (in fact if you insist on using the railcard there is a £12 minimum fare before 10am).
So the undiscounted Anytime Day Return is £7.90, and the discounted one is £5.20.

Do not try and use the discounted ticket before 10am.

Thanks for your help - so if i was to buy the cheaper ticket i'd face paying a surcharge up to £12 on the train? I will just buy the undiscounted ticket for £7.90 to be on the safe side!

    Thanks again.

  • They may not have released the cheaper advance purchase tickets just yet which is why you're only finding the anytime fares.
