Whilst this isnt relevant now why on earth did you not book them the sleeper on the friday then a train Southampton and then same journey back?

Using Advance Singles you could, with a bit of flexibility on your times, do that trip for just under £90 return per adult.
With Advance Singles you must travel on the booked train.
To get those fares you need to book on the East Coast trains website.

Could you perhaps consider travelling with Grand Central Trains from Sunderland?

A fully flexible Off Peak Return on GC Trains only is £89.00.
A drawback is that they only run four trains each way per day on your dates...
dep Sunderland .6:43, 08:30, 12:18, 17:29.
dep London Kings Cross 09:48, 13:48, 16:48, 18:23.
and of course you have to get to Sunderland... Single = £3.10.

By the way, if you had bothered to tell us that you had already found tickets for £80, then I wouldn't have wasted time writing my previous post.

Sorry it's for 2, thanks for the link. Apologies I looked into that option after your suggestion which was great, thanks again for being so helpful. I had loked at prices but they were coming in over a £100 per adult, hence the request for cheaper tickets or different options which is great.

I did think about recommending the sleeper, however, the OP's husband wouldn't be able to get back after the match as the last train from London to Aberdeen was 14:00 and there's no sleeper services on a Saturday night, so rail fare + the added expense of a Hotel would have been a lot more than £150

Firstly, children under five travel free.

On the dates you have specified...
Four adults from London to Glasgow can be done for £103.00.
Four adults from Edinburgh to London can be done for £77.20.
These are Advance Singles, and to get these fares you must book on East Coast Trains website to take advantage of both their online discount and their small group discount.

Check out that website and other possible dates to see if you can find cheaper dates/times... although £45 per person return London to Scotland looks quite good to me.

With Advance Singles you must travel on the booked trains.
