Broken down and very scared

  • I have decided to serve the 4 weeks notice on my flat, simply because it gives me a bit of time to get myself sorted and find somewhere else to live.

I have contacted the council tax office, and I'm a bit confused.

They have said that if I write to them and tell them the situation, I will only have a balance of £27 to pay when I move out, and that if I apply for single persons discount backdated from when he left, I will owe less. What's confusing me is, will instill have to pay the £97 that I should her paid on 28th October? Or will it be less than that? They ne'er really explain these things and I never know what to ask until I get off the phone! Any ideas? xx
  • It sounds like it will be a maximum of £27 (not the £97 due previously), but possibly less if they agree to backdating. However, the best bet is to get the application in, stop any pending payments, and request a final statement when you move out. Council Tax is not technically "overdue" until the end of the financial year, so although it's a priority debt in most circumstances, waiting until you receive a final statement at this time of year would be better than overpaying.

For what it's worth, I think you're being very brave, but giving the agents another month's money just because they don't follow the law on letting correctly seems a bit daft when you've cheaper options available...
  • It's not really about letting the agent get away with it, I just cannot handle the stress of moving in 2 days, because there is so much that needs to be done before I go, it just gives me a bit of breathing space too.

Regarding the C/tax, should I not pay anything this month and wait until I move out to pay what is left?

You could e-mail them to tell them your leaving date and ask for a final account to be sent out.

Have you given the landlord notice in WRITING. You must do this before the next rent day, not on the next rent day
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • I am going to take it tomorrow so it will be in time. I'm going to take the written notification into the council tax office tomorrow too.

Hi guys. I have just rang the estate agents to tell them the situation and tell them
That I need to move out, and they told me that I have to give 4 weeks notice to end the tenancy, which means I will have to pay another months rent. They said that they can transfer the bond but they will need to inspect the property to see if they can do that, but I haven't got time to get it all sorted for them to do that, so im stuck here for another 4 weeks. Any advice? xx

I've not read all the posts so forgive me if someone has already said this but, assuming there is a refundable deposit, could you ask them to deduct the last months rent from that instead of retuning it? It may help in the short term?
    Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

    December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.10

The only way they claim they can do this is if they come and inspect the property first, to ensure that the bond does not need to be used against any damages etc, there is no damages and the flat is in perfect condition, except that when we moved in the flat was furnished, so we put alot of the furniture that was in here into storage, and I wont have time to get it back in before the property is inspected, so transferring the bond is not going to be possible.

The tenancy was signed on 21st, the rent is paid on 26th, so I presume I must do it before 21st, is that correct?
  • Can anyone advise me on what I should write in the letter to the LA telling them
That I wish to terminate my tenancy and serve my 4 weeks notice?

You have been advised to redirect mail, so that a later tenant can't use the info dishonestly. Good. But even with that lots of things cotinue to arrive after the 3 months. Last time I moved I emailed all the catalogues that I get sent, It was very successful. I know the person who moved into my house and he doesn't get anything at all sent to my name.
