Is your heating ON or OFF?

  • It's still warm here. I've just put my heating on for an hour , but only to dry off some laundry and I'm to hot. Even the kids arn't complaining yet, so keeping it off for a while yet.

Interesting how much folk pay differs. I pay £100 per month (3 people in detached bungalow) but I am currently 135 in credit, which should help when it gets chilly.

I think you have a good point about perception. Last year I lived in a big, cold damp house, had a gas/elect direct debit that was unmanageable and still getting in debt. I would read comments that upset me because in those circumstances I was unable to do anything about it. I was most probably sensitive.

This year I'm out of that house and luckily rent a cosy little new build and can see it from a different perspective.

    Apologies for causing offence.
  • Like other posters, I've moved from a big old draughty flat to a top floor new build with proper insulation and dg. So, its currently about 20c on the thermostat - put a hoodie on when I got up as it was chilly out this morning but been doing housework, so am all toasty now. Unless we get a baltic October, am aiming for November as heating ON time.
  • Currently still off, although windows have been shut this week as I am beginning to feel the cold... I would like to get to the end of the month without putting the heating on!
  • We had the fire lit a couple of nights last week and the OCH was put on for an hour or so this morning as there has been torrential rain and high winds all day and me and my auntie have the cold. I'm currently sitting on the sofa in jeans and a hoody and I'm not cold

This is where we are too, only the skylights are open now and they stay open all year due to damp in the flat. Blankets and hoodies are out for me, but OH seems fine, duvet came out this morning, but only the summer weight one as we are both radiators when we sleep! Heating bills are so expensive for us because of the rubbish boiler, so we've not fully got over the long cold winter, nothing like the amount of credit built up that we had before that :(

I'm just glad we aren't alone in being cheapskates, most people I know have put theirs on, but we just can't afford it yet.
  • still off here, I live in north west england in a mid terrace its insulated well and 20 degrees inside so still in t shirts here. I have shut windows though for first time in ages. I have to say in comparison terms my house a mid terace over 100 years old was 20 degrees and my mums 1970's build semi both on same council tax banding was 17 degrees this morning. Her house is always colder than mine. In winter though in my terraced house you could hang meat in the bedrooms it's that cold and in summer you could produce a fry up on the window sil lol.

My heating has been on and off, like i say its more to do with health issues, and a partner who tells me off if i don't switch it on and i'm cold.

Don't know about anyone else my knees are clicking like i don't know what, the pain and cold is really getting to me.

We used to live in an old large Victorian house, it was the most draughty house i have ever lived in. Full of damp, condensation and no matter how much heat you pumped into it, the windows still froze up. Didn't need a freezer as the milk froze on the worktop  Yes and it was only 6 months ago that i left there.

Were currently living in a 1960's house, terrace and 3 bedrooms. I'm hoping that my bills will be significantly lower. Anythings better than year.
I really can't afford the heating, had the rent officer shocked at how little were living on. I'm just lucky my family will generally eat whatever i make. so i can reduce my food bill even more. But needs must, if it has to go on, then so be it :(

Fuddle lives less than 10 miles away from me but the temperatures can change significantly. As can flooding, wind etc
Living in the North East of England is completely different to living in London. I know i had my friends and family whinging at us every time they visit us, and they used to live here!!!

My boys are used to the cold and still haven't acclimatised to the new house. So when they say its cold, it generally really is.
Not all children are softies regarding the cold, after all most kids will be out playing in the snow till they got icicles hanging off them.
  • Still off here atm, invested in some 'space rugs' (bit like the starwars jedi outfits but cheaper/softer :) ) last year and didn't need to put the heating on much at all.
Going to need my bed socks soon though and it's a bit nippy getting up in the night without carpets

It's odd how two houses on the same street can have different heating issues.

My house is north facing so the kitchen and back room are generally warmer, the front never gets much sun and all the wind and rain so it's always cooler.

T'other side of the road is warm at the front.

It'a why we moved into the back room, good bit warmer.
