Is your heating ON or OFF?

This thread always tends to turn into a competion and/or snobbery if some people dare to post they have the heating on.
My grandma never failed to put a log and shovel of coal on the fire when the mornings were chilly. If she is of the mindset to make sure their living room was toasty when the rest of the house had icicles on the inside then I think if you feel the cold get some heat in your living space. She didn't have a thermostat. She went by how cold she felt.0 -
Take you and I today pops. Pops' living room is 16, mine is now reading 20.5. We're what? 10 miles away from each other? I'd encorage him to put some heat on but he doesn't feel cold so...0

I'm absolutely freezing!!! I don't have thermostats but I've got a thermometer and it's saying it's only 15 degrees in my house at the moment!!!!! I did have the bedroom window open as I like to air it out every day, so I've shut that, put on a few extra layers and am snuggled under a couple of blankets on the sofa trying to warm myself up
Have got some more blankets out of storage and shoved them in the washing machine to freshen them up, so will pop the heating on for an hour or so later to help dry them as well as warm up the house when it gets dark and even colder!! Really didn't want to put the heating on at all in September though

I think that is a bit unfair. Plently of people have posted to say if you are in a vunerable group and need the heating on, put it on, it is not worth struggling with cold in those circumstances and nobody is encouraging anyone to that.
For the rest of us who are perfectly able to manage in lower temperatures and wish to save a few pennies by keeping the heating off till as long as possible, whats the harm in it? I am an adult when I get to the stage it is too cold for me or my son the heating will go on and no one on an internet forum will effect my decision on that, however it is still nice for me to hear that others are doing the same and I am not the only person in the UK with my heating still off.0 -
It's still warm here. I've just put my heating on for an hour , but only to dry off some laundry and I'm to hot. Even the kids arn't complaining yet, so keeping it off for a while yet.
Interesting how much folk pay differs. I pay £100 per month (3 people in detached bungalow) but I am currently 135 in credit, which should help when it gets chilly.Well Behaved women seldom make history

I've had my heating on in June and off in November, I don't think that way anymore. I go with how cold it is now, sadlly have to due to health issues. Just less money for other things, but heat is now a priority. I still try to use it efficiently and not waste tho.
I have foiund that keeping the house from getting too cold seems to be cheaper than letting it get to baltic and then having the boiler work at full blast to get the place warmed up.
There isn't that much in it money wise to be honest but my house is a big old drafty high ceiling effort. The comfort level is very much better, and very little condensation or damp.0 -
Ive not put the heating on yet, however our conservatory if getting a bit chilly, and as my DS3 sleeps in there (long story) I have switched the little electric powered, oil-filled radiator on low for him in the evenings. Hope it doesn't cost too much, well at least less than heating the whole house with gas fired central heating,

Type of property and location obviously has a hand in it as well - it's bound to be colder in a single house (and therefore heat needed first) in a really rural, exposed area than in a block of flats in the middle of a city.
Northern Scotland will obviously be colder before somewhere like London too
The drugs I take can affect how cold I feel - I can have days when I've got several layers of clothing on, a duvet over my knee and could have the thermostat set at 30 deg and still be frozen
I've put mine on for an hour - having a cold dayand I've been at my parents (whose house is always warm - usually too warm for me!) so I'm feeling it even more than usual

It's unfair if we're talking about the users posting today but historically this thread does have a tendency to turn competitive and look down upon people who do post that the heating on.
I'm of the 'its not a competition' camp and don't judge, its what I've been posting about all day - some people will judge though and have done in the past.0 -

I posted on last years thread and remember a few people saying the same thing back then.
The thing is, i have never felt that it was being competitive. Maybe it's all in how you perceive it? For me it was just nice to know that others couldn't afford to have the heating on 24/7 and was a handy 'go to' for advice/ideas on how to keep warm on a budget.
I remember last year that hand warmers from poundland were mentioned, microwaveable 'bean bags' that i'd never heard of etc.0
