Is your heating ON or OFF?

This is a long standing debate!
I've always wondered about this too.
I think that when you flick the heating on "as and when" you need it, then surely the boiler has to work harder to get the house up to temperature compared with a constant tickover of heat on and off to maintain a temperature, but that's just my opinion.
I appreciate an experiment is only valid to the house it's tried in due to boiler efficiency, insulation etc, but I may try it myself to see what's better for us.0 -
I sit here in front of a beautiful open fire tonight and its bliss.......0

My heating has been on all day. I'm in my thermals and still it's chilly upstairs. Heating won't be turned off til 9pm tonight till 6.30am in the morning. This morning when I came down, just as heating was coming on, I felt the stairs banister, boy was that icy cold!0

Do you have insulation Fuddle? It really shouldn't be that cold upstairs as heat rises... unless it's rising right out of your place!
I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...
I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!0 -

Apparently it has cavity wall insulation but I can't see how really. We get draughts through the gap under the front door (even with a curtain and draught excluder) plus the bedrooms are laminated, which I don't think helps the situation. The back bedrooms are an extension which just can't be insulated but it's all ok as I'm moving in 2 weeksAlso I keep the downstairs door closed to keep all the heat in the living room so I doubt that will help.

So far we've managed without switching the heating on once since we moved into this new flat (June), it's become a game.
I think being in a flat means we're warmer than a house, although I have had to put two jumpers on this evening. Every time I think about turning it on I remember our combined Gas & Electric bill is only £32 a month right now and reach for another pair of socks.........:D
We're in the process of buying an old Victorian Terrace so I'm sure our increase in Gas & Electric there will more than wipe out any small savings we're making now.Debt at 1/5/09 £21,996 _pale_
