My central heating is firmly off (but was for most of last winter as well) but I did put my little electric heater on for a bit in the evenings over the weekend, just for an hour or so to take the edge off.
Am not planning to put it on this evening. I'll be going for a hot bath in a bit and will probably have an early-ish night as there's nothing decent on tv tonight! I generally find though, that once I've had a bath and put my pj's and dressing gown on, I stay pretty toasty for the rest of the night anyway.Because it's fun to have money!

Sounds like heaven I would love a real fire, think that's why I love candles burning there the next best thing. No CH on here it's not cold at the moment,we hardley used it last year due to me being made redundant and this year I'm earning a fraction of what I was so will be doing the same again.0 -
There's nothing worse than leaving the house in winter to do something (in my case walking the dog), getting frozen and then going back to a cold house. For that reason I'm considering ways of keeping warm whilst out and about. In addition to the usual (two fleeces, thick gloves, hat and scarf, outer coat etc) I'm of the thinking that we don't put enough effort into warming ourselves from the waist down. So without further delay, I present... Ski Pants!
Padded trousers to keep your legs warm. You will be the envy (laughing stock) of the entire neighbourhood.
I have a pair of zip on zip off padded trousers designed for horse riding with a suede bum to them do the job well. Not sure about the look sans horse though! I don't care I can't really see me when I am walkingStart info Dec11

Cor, it makes me laff (or else I'd cry!) we have a whizz bang super efficient cost a bomb boiler, a tumble dryer, halogen do dads, gadgets and geehaws galore and we can't afford to do anything with them.
I do wonder sometimes if I wouldn't have been better off buying a few halogen heaters instead of paying 4k for central heating. 4K buys a whole lot of juice , and all the breakdown plan and servicing costs and they don't last that long anyway!
I am thinking all this condenser whojamapiffy stuff is a bloomin' con.0 -

You know if a visitor came or someone who has a go about people who have the lastest gadgets and are called scroungers would say you are doing well but as you say being able to afford to run them is another matter...lots of assumptions are made without often knowing the whole story. Also people can be judgemental..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Goodness I wish I had all the gadgets and geehaws Popperwell, I don't. I can't afford them. I had to save for forever and cough up for my central heating as my old boiler was 32 and going senile.
What I meant was, it just seems a shame that we have the most amazing technology, such as central heating, tumble dryers, power showers, instant hot water and halogen ovens and the like and yet are unable to use them to the full as the cost of power is so high.
I remember the drive for technology when I was young this was to be coupled with the new nuclear power stations on the horizon and energy would be nearly free. Seems they only got one side of that equation right,0 -
Even talking generally your point is well made Blue Bag...just as we were told years ago we would live longer(that is true up to a point)but they used to say as we were growing up tha t we would have a long and happy retirement...
instead many are on low pensions, struggling to pay normal bills and yes whilst some work after retiring(voluntarily)many are now having to because the pension does not cover costs...and they keep putting the age to retire back...
I know it's not bad for everyone."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
