I don't know if it is warmer or some of the tips shared on here are working but I managed to keep the heating off and the house seems warmer as I am in bed. I do hope it stays this way...

The sun's come out for the first time in seemingly weeks! Everything looks so beautiful, even the flooded valley below - I hope all the livestock are ok.

However the temp has dropped spectacularly in the past 90 minutes, now down to around 5 degrees - not that I would ever wish all that rain back again but at least it was warmer.

Would have my heating on if it worked!! The last years I have frozen and been miserable, when it's fixed I will luxuriate in the warmth. Will take the dog for a walk later, she hasn't been anywhere much this past week.

Hope it's as beautiful for everyone else. It's just catching the rose hips and glowing red, just stunning.
  • OFF !!! I refuse to put it on until at least the 1st October - usually goes off in April but this year it snuck into May which annoyed me so I'm trying to put it off as long as possible - tothis end I'm now wearing thermal socks with another pair of thick socks over the top & my feet are still like ice blocks :rotfl:

i turned mine off mid february this year and only had it on on 3 seperate days after that during spring since the winter had been so mild even up here in fife

aside from my test days which thankfully have proved they are still working, my heat is off and at this rate will stay off awhile longer thankfully. this morning the room temp was at 20.8C when i got up without any heat and i was quite comfortable last night reading in bed with bare arms poking out to hold the book so it's not time...yet

there have been a few days recently with the gales and grey and lower temps that i was tempted around 4 pm to turn on the wee fan heater (i have storage heaters so i can't just turn the heat on as i please) but i know this is usually the time of day i feel my coldest and that the neighbours flat always seems to warm up my floor around 6pm ish (not sure what's going on there she has storage heaters too!) so i resisted, didn't even grab a blanket for my lap

i did finally draught proof my house and do most of the window bubblewrapping but i think i'll be ok til at least mid october unless temps just fall drastically, least i hope so :p

Luckily here in London it seems to have warmed up a bit. Still no heating but am in bed with a cold and sore throat, so if it goes colder again, I am going to put it on.

On Monday we have a gas plumber coming to check radiators as DD's does not work and my bedroom one works too much (meaning we cannot switch it off!), so the heating will be on for a short while.

I have been cooking dinners in the oven on a couple of evenings and thoroughly enjoyed the warmth in the kitchen!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • We haven't put the heating on yet. We have gas central heating, plus a couple of electric fan heaters in the living room and study. If we put one of the heaters on for a little while and shut the door, it keeps the room warm for a long time. We haven't used those yet either.

I don't feel too cold yet today - I'm sitting here in a short-sleeved top, leggings and slippers! - although I have a cold so maybe that's why. I also have a cushion on my lap with my netbook on top. I just warmed my hands up a little by putting them under the netbook!

I'm not working at the moment (just doing some freelancing from home now and then), so I've been trying to think of ways to stay warm.

I bought a big, furry throw yesterday, that replaces one we've just got rid of. I'll use that on the sofa and on the bed. Was thinking I could put a blanket on the bed too, under the mattress protector, but all I have is a tartan picnic blanket, will that be ok do you think?!

I've also bought a few new jumpers - some thin ones that can be worn on their own and a big thick one that can be layered up for when I'm really cold. I must sort out my wardrobe for winter!

I've started to sit in the study in the afternoons when I'm here (I try to get out and about as much as I can) as if the sun's out it comes in through the windows and warms me up!

Hot drinks are good too, and next time I'm baking I might keep the oven door open afterwards to warm the kitchen up.

I find that running about doing jobs in the house warms me up too.

Maybe I could start having soup for lunch as well. My mum's given me a butternut squash, so I might try to make one with that. Trouble is they're so difficult to peel and chop!

Just thought of something else I can do to warm up with DH - no, not that lol! - cuddles on the sofa in the evening. We usually have a sofa each, so he'll have to come and join me on mine (better view of the tv! ;) )

Gosh we have a load of softies here!

Our heating didn't go on until Early December last year, although I note that from my records that this time last year we were basking in temperatures in the mid 20's, well here in Somerset anyway!

Even until the end of October temperatures were in the high teens, and didn't drop as low as they did Sunday last until the 7th of November.

December looks a long time away right now!

Not sure whether it's been suggested before, but wonder if it would be useful for everyone to put roughly where they are - not everyone, including me, has this in their profile. Otherwise temperatures are pretty meaningless.

keicar's in Somerset and I'm high up in the Peak District - expecting snow next week. Wind attacks from north, south, east and west. House walls are 2ft thick, I usually open all doors and windows to warm up the house - all the insulation in the world isn't going to help if the heat isn't in in the first place. After dropping down to 5, temp is now about 9 and 12 in the house so ok for now.

If anyone doesn't know, there's a great preparing for winter thread too, with lots of inventive ideas for keeping warm when the cold comes.

I live in the deep South West Liz, so generally we are warmer but not always. Current outside temp is 12c which is higher than yesterday, but very damp as there's been masses of rain. My walls are 2 ft thick too, great in the summer (:rotfl:) but not so good now.
