  • because my landlord is playing for time in fixing/replacing windows and patio doors, and mending the roof so water doesn't gush down my walls, (only been 3 winters now) i have been putting in excess of £50 a week on my meter. i have made the decision that he isn't going to get all his rent on monday. i will make it up when i can, but right now, i need to be warm.

I know your housing and issues of disrepair are none of my business but since you raised it first: please be aware that if you are not on a fixed-term tenancy your landlord could issue you with two month's notice the day after the rent is due if he chose.

There are ways to compel your landlord to address necessary repairs but withholding rent is not one of them. Please consider approaching your Local Authority's Environmental Health department or their Tenancy Relations section but first you need to put your observations IN WRITING asking for a response within a reasonable time.

Os course, none of this matters if you would be happy to be evicted and and have the money to find somewhere more congenial and comfortable to live.

No heating on here today yet. I've had the windows open to give the place a good airing despite it being only a couple of degrees above freezing. I've been busying myself doing chores and cooking. Now that I've stopped and it's got dark I'm feeling a bit chilly. Not surprising really as it's only 8 degrees in here.

Heating's just gone on for a couple of hours. Or I might just eat a red-hot curry instead.
  • Definitely on and bu$$er the bills If I get too cold my joints won't work and I'd end up in hospital so I won't compromise on heating.Luckily I have quite a big chunk in credit on my gas at the moment as I like to pay extra in during the summer to cover a possibility of a cold snap

The heating has been on constant. We have not used any more by having it on all the time at all.

We have also been supplementing the heating with the fuel burner which chucks out quite allot of heat. Thaw is due for mid next week - can't come soon enough!

Good grief! I think you are within your rights to withold your rent until the repairs get done. Write him a letter (or get a solicitor to do it) telling him why he isn't getting his rent. £50 a week is way to much because he is being tight/lazy.

ETA: I think BitterandTwisted's response is much better than mine, lol!

Put mine on for an hour this morning...was feeling rather cold and fragile after a late night out:o

I've resorted to staying in bed to keep warm....(still recovering:o) ........so it's not been on since:)

  • We are back to having the heating on for 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening plus an hour in the middle of the day if we really need to. Snow has thawed a little here today and I am hoping thats the last of the really hard frosts.

Woodburner is going and we have a couple of oil radiators on low but at least we are not using the heating oil which is the main thing.
