yes Addiscomber i remember times without heating. i am only 25 but when my hubby and i bought our first home, it had no heating in it. just one very expensive to run eletric log effect thing with a fan blower. the flat had very very high ceiligns and old wooden sash windows what rattled when the wind blew, the windows were massive. it was built in 1760 and had extremly thick walls. so even when we did put the heatin on it did nothing. We couldn't afford to put central heating in ,and at the time we couldn't afford to run electric heating. so many an evening we sat in bed with hot water bottles and hats and gloves on. the kitchen was warmest when i was cooking. every morning we would wake up and see our breath it was that cold. one morning we even had ice on inside of window.

But it was fun in a way. it was our first home together and we were gratful to be together. but with children it certainly wouldn't be sensible

gosh when I think back 50 years!!

outside lav with a paraffin lamp to stop the pipes freezing up. Solid ice on the inside of the windows. Going to bed dressed because it was so freezing cold. One fire downstairs and you`d stand with your back to it, then couldn`t move away because it was lovely and warm on your legs.

Bringing the washing in, from the two lines in the backyard, for mum and it was stiff as wood. Then waiting for it to thaw and hang on the pull up airer in the living room with the fire and all this with 7 children. How on earth she got through the washing in the winter, I`ll never know. By the way washing was started by soakng in a bath of cold water overnight and you can imagine how cold the hands got dealing with that lot

Blimey we`re so lucky these days

Nope, not on yet and windows still open! It's still T shirt weather in Newcastle, as long as your Tshirt has long sleeves. Seems to get wetter and chillier (and darker) at night but during the day it's fine still. Not sure just how long it will last though.

    :j
  • Mine's not officially on yet ;) Although I did turn it on last night for 1/2 hour - just to check it would work - honest guv :D
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)

:snow_grin Its bloody freezing here - our top temp for the day has been 15 degrees!!

Well no heating here yet - thank god as i dont know how much we can afford to spend on our gas bill this year - we are due to move to a hosue soon (we live in a flat at present) and i know its going to cost a fortune to heat. am thinking of stealing my mums portable gas fire so i can use it in the kitchen in the new house purely to heat it up for pooch! At the mintue liek ive said i havent had the heating on but my little one did go to bed last ngith in clothes he'd been in all day - he crashed out on the sofa last night cuddling the dog and i didnt have the heart to wake him. When i was tucking him under hs duvet in his bed thgouh he did ask fo rhis bob the builder fleece thgouh so i double folded that and put it over his duvet. Think i might have to llok at buyign him a winter duvet soon (its only since may this year hes really had a proper duvet then i think i mgiht lay the summer one under him to keep hima bit warmer). Sorely tempted to buy me and bf a new duvet so we are doubled up too!!!

i remember for Bens first Xmas (2004) our bolier broke at the beginning fo December and wasnt mended until 22nd December!! nearly 3 weeks with no hot water and no heating - now that was bloody freezing. most hosues ive grown up in had coal fires and that was my morning chore - to fill the coal skuttle in the morning adn we lived in middle of germany so every Xmas there it snowed!!!!!. Absolutely loved having a coal fire there but my god it was cold some days........

Christmas is definately coming though and i have a funny feeling with all this strange weather it could snow a fair bit this year!!! My nephew is already askign if its snowing in mid wales!!!!! sure it wont be long though! my flu/cold medicine box has never looked so full as im sure we are in for a few this year.

but still no heating but hte hot water bottles are being ared and primed ready for tonight and think i might try and find a fleece blanket for on top of my bed!!!

  • It has been lovely sunny weather again today...but it turned chilly earlier today than yesterday...around 3.30pm and went from shorts/top to longs/fleece...added a heavier duvet on the bed today although have not felt cold in bed but reading this thread MADE me....Not had the need for heating on as yet but a few more degrees lower and it will be on when needed but very aware of the high cost of gas now so will be keeping the temp a tad lower.
We had no central heating back in the late 60's and had 1 gas fire in the main room and for a short while we had parafin heaters in several other places....we where glad of the heat from them but really thought they where awlful. So pleased when we had the Central Heating installed even though it was added to our Morgage...likewise the Double Glazing that also replaced rotten windows. Seemed essential at the time but the increase on the Morgage payments did hit us hard.

Still trying to hold out with no central heating but last night was cold so we burnt some wood in the woodstove, it seems to warm the fabric of the house so i feel the benefit even upstairs in my bedroom.

1st November is my deadline, but might change depends on how my kids feel.

brrr - chilly here too ! I relented & put the heating on last night for an hour or so before bed, then when I got up at 4.30am (yes I know !) I put it on for a bit as well. I've been to Aldi this week & we all have cosy fleece blankets in bed & both kids have fleecy tops on over their pj's. I was hoping to hold out a bit longer, especially with gas prices being as they are, but DS keeps waking up when he's too cold & if the air's too cold it sets off his asthma, so it looks like that'll be us till about Easter !

Yes, we succumbed on Sunday Night. Now I just have to stop the DW opening all of the windows

(Only on for minimum time morning and evening as yet, I'm delighted to say, and the 'stat is low too!)

    Regards,
