I'm afraid I've given in and had the heating on for an hour here or there quite a few times.

Though we live in a nice new (rented ) new build which we were told is very well insulated so we should not feel the cold so much the house is nearly always freezing.

The living/dining room is the worst culprit.

I've sat in there fully togged up with thick socks, gloves, a hat and under a big thick throw or two and I'm still shivering (you know when you get waves of shivers going right through you?) because it's so cold.

Even OH is chittering and he rarely feels the cold... the kids have started to complain too.

And yet, when you go up to bed at night it doesn't *feel* bad at all, not that icy bed syndrome that you usually get in the winter (and that applies wether the heating has been on or not.)

I cannot for the life of me understand why the living/dining area is so very cold all the time?

    1. How much heating are you using?

    2. what is the layout of the house? (ie is it open plan and staircase going up from sitting room)

    3. I'm wondering whether you could get in someone to investigate the structure of the house a bit - to see if that is the cause (eg Warm Front people re the possibility of putting in cavity wall insulation). You may find they tell you the place hasnt got cavity wall insulation - from that, I dont know what the position is re getting it installed for free?? I would investigate this myself - maybe/maybe not - but its always worth asking.

At a practical level - maybe the floor construction on the ground floor leaves something to be desired. Perhaps there's a galeforce "wind" level of cold air blowing underneath your ground floor floorboards.?

    """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

check out all the above first - its probably summat to do with just above or just beneath those ground floor floorboards. Come back and ask again if you've checked out the "practical" aspects and still not got an explanation.
  • I really hear what you are all saying, its cold.
I wanted to leave the heating off for as long as possable, but today I crumbeled and put it on for one hour only, just while we all got washed and dressed. I made sure every one had put socks on and a tshirt, with flece. the kids are no longer saying that they are cold. :j

It may have to go on tomorrow as the south is said to have gales and lashings of rain in store. Oh Joy.

i too had the heating on yesterday but only for an hour whils't the kids had showers

BUT heres another question did that take more energy to heat just for the hour ? and is it worth having the heating on lower for longer and set thermostat so it comes on and off if it gets too low ??

will say so far the heating hasnt been on today (been in and out shoping ect) so havent felt the cold as yet :o

We had our first frost last Wednesday and since then it has seemed cold enough for snow!

So far OH is kept busy sawing up any scrap wood for the wood-burner and we're using that instead of the Gas CH. It's actually lovely on a day like today - when people were queuing up at Primark to buy scarves and gloves, to sit here watching to flames and knowing it's costing nothing.

I am considering wapping the heating on for an hour to dry the school uniforms.. otherwise the pure wool sweaters will NEVER dry... but sense has finally taken over and I am going to hang them on my oven door handles while the bread cooks.. I have 2 TD's on which are doing a fab job of warming the downstairs too..

We've got one bar going on the halogen heater and I am sat here in socks, track pants, a long sleeved t-shirt and a cardigan, but I am STILL cold!

It is windy out and there is still some cold coming in from somewhere, despite all my draught excluders and curtains and cling film on the windows and front door.

OMG, but I am feeling SO miserable and the heavy rain tomorrow will just finish me off.

reason being wednesday i felt offish just thought i was tired from work, by thursday i felt like i was swalloing razor blades and friday i had to drag myself from bed i felt awful, had to put on a smile as it was ds's birthday but all day i felt cold, ill shivery the works, crunch time came last night, i had a long sleve top 2 jumpers a fleece on, 3 pairs of socks and i was still cold, had an awful night and dont feel much better this morning, i was also fed up o my little ones getting into my bed as they were cold

my heating is now on, and to top it off the damp is back the rendering is still not finished as the conecrete stuff is yet to have any piant/waterproof covering on it and a mouldy damp cold house is no fun

ok still no heating but am seriously considering it - have just snug proofed dogs bed - put an old pillow in an old pillowcase and put it in his old bed - he has one of those weird polyester foam thing beds that has sides but no cushioning if you know what i mean - will find a picture just incase

    http://www.petplanet.co.uk/shop_dev/assets/new_product_images/snoozee/snooz_macsnoozee_bed.jpg

vey basic but better than nothing. Well he now has a cushion in an old pillowcase stuffed in the bottom of it so he has comfy padding. He was quite happy in it but think with this weather he needed somethign to snuggle into -thinking about getting him one of those large cat beds that are a bit like a hole - maybe he'll be warmer and more comfortable

My 4 yer old also gave me a good idea - hes been off playign in his rooma dn has obviously been in the 'no children allowed to open this tub' as hes reappeared witha teddy dressed in some of his old clothes - brainwave!!! - now my doggy is sporting the latest fashion - a small tshirt that was my sons at about 6 months - which has the words 'teddy made me do it' written across the front - although the front is now on the dogs back - but he looks warmer and seems to be cuddling up happily with my 4 year old now so hey ho - wont need the doggy jumper after all. :D and the slogan seems quite fitting for a jack russell.

my sister also gave me a bit of advice that her american bulldog use to stop eating in winter too and she said take his food up and give him a small dish of water nad to feed him chicken soup. The thinking being its full of nutrients for him and if hes hungry he'll eat it, also he has a drink available and that i can slowly add some of his dry food to it so it goes soggy.
