ok - mine has been on for one hour a day for the last 3 days. I must say this has mostly been for my older dog's benefit as I'd hate to think of her as being cold (getting a bit arthriticky). She's a Golden Retriever though with a wonderfully thick coat. I slept with a scarf on last night. Very fetching look but it was a kind of silky head scarfy type of scarf AND my OH was away. I think he would insist of the bedroom radiator being on if I went to bed with a scarf and I'm trying to keep the bedroom 'fresh' and bloomin' cold, thinking it will be better for us.

  • Ours is set to come on all year round if the temperature drops enough - the thermostat is set 18 degrees, it's been coming on (now and then) for a while.
We have a very economical gas fire in the lounge area which we use in the mornings and evenings when it is cold. Our down stairs area is large and virtually open plan - great in the summer - not quite so clever in the winter.

We also have thermostats on all of the bedroom radiators, so although the heating comes on in the bedrooms it's at a lower temperature than the living areas. I hate warm and stuffy bedrooms, I usually have a window open all year, though just sligtly open in the winter.

Another dilemma in these 2009 level fuel bills times is how to proceed when visiting friends who live in colder homes. It has just struck me that one of the reasons I havent been visiting one of my friends in her home so much is because I'm too cold when I go there. Their house always used to be warm enough - but they are using the heating less these days to keep bills down. Very understandable - due to their low income level. Can sympathise and wish I was in a position to help them out financially.

I'm wondering what I can do inconspicuously about staying warm enough if I go there on visits. Thought about putting on some thermal underwear - but would be sweating buckets by the time I get to their house if I wore it en route and it would be a bit conspicuous visiting the loo to change into it whilst there. Can obviously wear a pair of Ugg boots - and that will be inconspicuous - I could just be wearing them because they're fashionable and very comfortable. Wondering about whether bodywarmers are any good? (Thinking it might be a possibility to wear one of them between jumper and cardigan? over cardigan?). Dont want to go round carrying one of my fleeces - my friends would feel humiliated if I wrapped one of them round myself whilst there. Hmmm.....thinks...how do I get to stay warm enough without my friends feeling they are being bad hosts as their guest is obviously cold? I wont upset my friends on t'one hand - but cant stand being cold on t'other hand.

Hmmm....'twould help if wearing those pull-on woolly hats everywhere (including indoors) was fashionable - but it isnt, so I wont be able to do that and plead "I'm only following fashion - I like it" if she asks why I've got one on.

Thanks so much for this! I'm having a really bad day - money woes and I'm freezing too, and this literally made me LOL.
    Thank you :)

I've had to give in and put it on tonight - I am sitting here looking Dead Sexy in all my layers but my hands were freezing.

I got a very nice pair of black thermal fingerless gloves off of Ebay for around £1.99 and the postage was cheap. Very toasty.

I just searched for thermal fingerless gloves and got mine off a power seller.

  • I seem to be the only one that feels the cold in this house. DH has an extra 10 stone on me, so he's still in a tshirt and the kids are so hotblooded - DS2 is in the garden in a tshirt at the moment. I'm sat here in 2 jumpers and I'm still freezing! The thermostat was 15C this morning but I'm still resisting putting the heating on. brrrr.....:snow_grin

We have recently changed the timer so the hot water is on for 4 hours less a day. Unbeleivably we haven't noticed any difference in the temperature. We even turned the water off for 24 hours last week and the water was still too hot to touch!

I'm afraid I've given in and had the heating on for an hour here or there quite a few times.

Though we live in a nice new (rented ) new build which we were told is very well insulated so we should not feel the cold so much the house is nearly always freezing.

The living/dining room is the worst culprit.

I've sat in there fully togged up with thick socks, gloves, a hat and under a big thick throw or two and I'm still shivering (you know when you get waves of shivers going right through you?) because it's so cold.

Even OH is chittering and he rarely feels the cold... the kids have started to complain too.

And yet, when you go up to bed at night it doesn't *feel* bad at all, not that icy bed syndrome that you usually get in the winter (and that applies wether the heating has been on or not.)

I cannot for the life of me understand why the living/dining area is so very cold all the time?

I switched mine on last night too, but only on low for an hour to take the chill off. I have not put it on today yet, but am sat in fleecy pyjamas and dressing gown. Have to brave the shower in the cold shortly ................

I gave in and put mine on last night. Although I'm going to try and not put it on for more than 2 hours a day when needed. :o

Still no heating on for us yet, & we're not even cold. I really can't decide wither we are hard or tight :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I know what you mean Westywoodpecker.

This morning I noticed for the first time that the temperature had dropped below 21 degrees. It hasn't been cold enough to put the heat on - but I did feel chilly this morning. Bed socks and a fleece work wonders though. I really don't want to put the heat on until we're all feeling really cold.

Temperature is still showing 20.5 in the livingroom and 18 degrees in the kitchen. It hasn't risen since I got up this morning.
