We have the woodburner alight tonight for the first time since the summer - and we count that as free heat as the wood is all free. We don't think of it as costing us anything, whereas the central heating oil costs a lot as we have to buy a load at a time for over £200 each time. We will be continuing to use the woodburner as our main source of heat when heat is necessary, for the next month or two - I wouldn't think that we will put the CH on until it is really cold! We are also more in favour of heating the room we are using than heating the whole house - it keeps the family together more that way. Extra blankets are already on the beds for nightime, and there are always hot bottles available too.December GC: £3500

Mine is off but I am in leggings, skirt, wooly jumper AND my fleece jacket!!! Might have to give in soon
Hate to be cold, but hate paying for gas even more!
LOL Further to my previous post, I caved in sooner than I thought!!! It was sooooo cold upstairs and the kids said they were freezing. They are having a friend sleepover tonight and the poor child put a hoody back on over PJs:o:o I just put the heating on for literally 5 mins, enough to get the radiators hot, its taken the chill off, and now its off again
Had to pick something up from a friends earlier and I could feel the heat as she opened the front door  Wouldn't like to see their gas bill when it gets really cold!0 -
mine is off but i have the light on the fake flame fire to make it look warmer
extra blankets on bed though!
One day I will live in a cabin in the woods0 -

I've lit the coal one, and switched on electric heaters, but maybe I don't have the heating on *shrugs shoulders* ??? I think it's disingenuous to think because you're burning wood or coal that you don't have "the heating" on. Personally, I go by the temperature in the house, not some random date, and of course individuals feel the cold differently, in the same way that some can enjoy summer temperatures of 90F while others are like limp lettuces at 75F.
Just edited to say this is not aimed at you chella:o I started to type before you posted but got called away. Just my general observation that folks aren't all using the same definition of heating. I take it to mean any source of heat other than the sun:D
This crops up every year on MSE. The thread title asks 'is your heating on or off?' To me if you have gas, coal, oil, electric or wood that is heating! I have my electric blanket on to keep warm so I guess I'm cheating, lol. Mind you, if people can get free wood that is a bonus! I didn't have any heating on last winter, bar my electric blanket which probably costs pence to run but it is a form of heat.0 -
We are obviously so lucky. It's 22.5c in our l/room and no heating of any kind has been used since about April (we only have c/heating anyway). It's definitely cold outside now in the mornings and evenings, but our house is warm, so long as we get some sun! We have a big bay window facing west, so it warms the l/room from mid-afternoon, and our bedroom.
When we moved in though, the whole house was freezing, double glazing was the first priority.0 -
off, and I'm still in summer pjs, and just a duvet and throw on the bed - got another duvet and 2 more throws to go yet!
Says it's 17c in the living room0 -

Really???!!! Wow! How?!!! I would LOVE to not have mine on if I could...
I have an elec blanket but its put away... somewhere... I have no idea where.
I think if you have any form of heating (fire, stove, CH, gasfire etc) then its providing heat, therefore you have heating... elec blankets don't count0 -
Frugal, the one flat (top floor) I lived in had high ceilings and sash windows. That winter it was freezing, we had to be careful with the heating as it was all electric! I have never felt so cold. We still got a bill for £600!! Then we moved to our current flat which is a new build, lots of insulation, double glazing and I tell you it's heaven. Even without the heating on last winter (and we had snow) it was ok. If I felt cold I put the electric blanket on and sat in bed with my laptop. This past winter was nothing compared to the one before that one, even my OH said he never felt so cold in that place. His toes turned white!
ETA: I think the lowest the temperature got here at our present place was 16 degrees in the last winter.0
