  • We have yet to turn ours on and I can't see it happening whilst the temps have been around 4C lately.

My daffs are poking their heads out, so hoping to have it off until winter by mid March. This is the first year we haven't bothered with the timer, we have put it on as we have needed it. So often, not on in the mornings and on from sixish til ten in the evenings. I am the coldest one so we always keep a couple of throws handy in the living room. x
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

Today even though it is quite cold outside I switched the heating to the clock, so we had a bit of it in the morning and it will go on again in the evening. All family was out during the day and I am the first back and it is not so cold that I feel the need for heating. Tonight DH and I are out but the kids might want a bit of warmth, so it will be ok if it switches on after 6 again.

Will keep reviewing it on a daily basis but I do not envisage any more 24/7 heating until next winter (unless a sudden severe freeze comes in and then we will have it on again). The aim remains 1st March for the definite OFF but we will see how it goes.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • Have had ours on three times since september as its a student house and we're all poor! we do use halogen heaters occasionally though.
  • -5 here so not yet! Prob mid march ish! Then just on for an hour early evening.x Good thread!

Turn the thermostat up, and/or fit trv's

Was that in reply to my post?

If so why? The therm doesn't need to be any higher just needs moving. TRV's were fitted from the beginning.
    Put the kettle on. ;)

Thanks Caterina for this thread. I started to think about when to switch it off after receiving a humungous bill and I kept it off until Nov and it is not on all day!

Right it is then to make some changes, reduce how long on in the morning from 50mins to 30mins and put on 30mins later in the evening at 6pm from tomorrow. Try and keep it off a next week in the week and pop it on if needed at the weekend (or if have a visitor!)

I use my hallway thermostat purely as a means of turning the heating "on" (set to 30C) or "off" (set to 10C).

The thermostat on the boiler itself gives a FAR better control over the heat of the actual radiators.

I usually set this at about 25% of the maximum which makes the radiators warm but not so hot you burn your hand if you touch them.
