my heating is on at 20 degrees - goes up to 25 when people visit, but otherwise we manage with jumpers and the timer and the thermostat. How else can I manage to wear all the jumpers that people keep knitting me!!
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.
  • Just going to play it by ear. Only have the heating on 6.30-8.15 in the morning and 5.00-10.30 in the evening. We have 7 rads and only 5 are on (landing and kitchen are very rarely put on). Its the gas fire in the front room that uses alot of energy (although not as much a you would think!) We are trying to put it on later in the evening now - about 8.00pm.

Depending on the temperature we will probably not use the fire after mid march and switch the heating off end March/mid April - but going to play it by ear.

Last year we switched fire off after having the winter bill and the heating off at the end of April (then it went back on for a week in May when I was poorly). Even so our bill was more reasonable than I thought it would be.

Will have to wait and see.

I have turned one of the storage heaters off, as I have had the bill and for just four storage heaters its working out £100 per month, thats with out all the other electricity! We are going to go for gas bwing put in for next winter, I hope to turn the heating off for the first of March and being storage heaters, once they are off they are off, no putting it on just for an hour! Still the everhot will be delivered end of the month and that will provide some warmth! Not looking forward to turning the heating off!
    Pawpurrs x ;)
  • not for a while...its fricking freezing! ;)
seriously tho it depends on the weather, hopefully spring will come soon and it'll be nice, sunny & warm so we can turn the heating off

Not for a long while yet, its too bleeding cold.
I have it set on timer so its always on from 5:30am - 8:30am and then 4:30 till 8:30 pm.
But the house is so cold i have to switch it on at 2:30 ready for when the kids get back. I never have it on though when the kids are at school, i just put on extra clothes and gloves.

Aiming for 1st March - unless I've got very young/elderly visitors.

That isn't exactly written in stone; IF we get a sudden drop in temp, it WILL go back on again on a day-by-day basis.

Thank you Ollie, that's exactly the spirit in which we have named 1st March, then see how it goes, I am definitely NOT into martyrdom for the sake of saving, nor would I recommend anybody to be!

Having said that, I really do feel for the people who cannot have enough heating because of very restricted circumstances, I wish that something could be done to ensure that nobody has to suffer cold (or hunger, for the matter) because of low income! Wish I had a solution...
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

I switched mine off a couple of weeks ago, as I can't afford it. My thermostat is currently showing it's 9 degrees. Pretty damn cold. I bought some thermal vests in pondland & thermal socks 3 prs for £1. With 3 jumpers & a jacket on it's bearable, just. Saves on water as well as it's far tooooo cold to undress for a shower. Oh well, onwards & upwards.

Can you really be definite about a date - surely it depends upon the weather and type of home you have. An old draughty housee without double glazing will need to have heating on for longer than a modern home with double glazing which doesn't lose the heat overnight. Also which way you face also affects the heat. We have a living room that faces North and is always cold but the study faces South and is lovely when the sun shines.

as a general rule we put it on when the clocks change in Oct, and turn in off when they change back in March. However, of 6 radiators in the house we only have 2 on in the morning/evening, and 1 for a couple of hours before we go to bed. We may well turn these off earlier, but it really does depend on the snow!
