Mine's still off - put it on in the living room when I came home from work two days ago (thermometer said 7 degrees) and after 4 hours it had only gone up to 10 degrees, so have decided not to bother. It's currently 8 degrees and I'm just about warm enough in 5 tops and under a fleece blanket. Do have an electric blanket on the bed though, which I wouldn't be without!
  • minus 9 tonight, heating on low setting, giving a temp of 22 in the living areas.

can anyone give me any links/info on the arguments for and against leaving heating on low setting versus turning it on and off, i usually have it on for a couple of hours in the morning then 6 hours in the evening, but have to turn the dial up high and it takes an age to increase in temperature, so is leaving it on on low better.

i guess i should be measuring the gas used this week and compare later with different usage, but so complicated as will need some formula for the outside temp each week i guess..

  • My heatings been on a lot as we've run out of logs for the woodburner - usually the heating is on morning 6.30 to 8.30am and evening from 6pm-11pm, with the woodburner keeping downstairs warm in the day. But now its really cold, I just cant turn it off at all until we go to bed, but it would be much warmer if the fire was going :(

Might have to leave a heater on in the kitchen overnight as Im worried about freezing pipes.

In the last two days it's been on every evening. Very cold here and I myself am recovering from a new year's cold (first in 4 years) and I have no intention of dragging it on. I'll spend what I have to spend, but I must put my health before any other considerations. No point saving a wad and catching pneumonia, lol.

well today I opened up all the windows and the
front and back door, kids moaning told them to
throw a fleece on,I just felt the air seemed so
stale in here.Kept it like this wile I was tidying up
so was too busy to think of how cold it was.
So glad i did this as it seems a lot fresher in here.
At times its been too hot in here ,the heat seems
to build up and linger for a long time.

Hubby came home from work last night with sacks of logs for the lounge fire and he went and got a screwdriver out of the shed and took the radiator cover off to let more heat into that room(we only have one in the front lounge)so we ended up a very toasty 20 degrees in the main room last night, thank goodness as I had been shivering all day.
The heating has been on low all night for the sake of the house and the pipes etc and its quite comfortable this morning although I still had to throw a fleece jacket on when I got up earlier.
temp in the house today is much warmer than yesterday at 18 degrees and the dining room is very toasty this morning at 22 degrees(a teeny bit too warm for me actually).
Just went to check boiler to see why dining room is so warm and noticed hubby has cranked it up to the medium setting so I have turned it down just a little, will put it back up after he gets home from work.
It only took 10 mins to get down to 18 degrees, thats better.

I have a 'Help the Aged' thermometer card in the sitting room. Its 15 degrees in there now, but we run the CH for an hour each morning.
It was 12 degrees midafternoon yesterday, even though it was sunny. Despite lots of layers I was still cold - so on with the blanket!

We have no heating in our kitchen and the pipes in there are frozen and have been on and off for a week. Luckily the water comes into the bathroom first - something to do with solid floors, so we can fill the kettle from there. Being disabled and not being very mobile doesn't help, but thankfully we've had a cold weather payment to cover the extra heating costs - though I am going stir crazy because I can't get out of the house.

I admit that I'm terrible for having the heating on all the time - I feel the cold and my nose is always frozen! So I spend a fortune on gas then feel skint and guilty about CO2 emissions. As part of my money saving resolutions I'm leaving the heating off as much as possible, so now I'm sitting here wearing tights, socks, leggings, jogging bottoms, vest, 2 jumpers, dressing gown and a woolly hat - and my nose is still cold!

I do have it on during the night though, I don't sleep well and need the room to be warm otherwise I will keep waking up.
