Find going to bed early with a hot water bottle and listening to radio is cheaper than having the heating on throughout the evening. However the last two nights have been bitterly cold and we,ve been woken at various times during the night with the central heating boiler clicking in to keep the minimum temperature at 16.5

We simply turn an electric radiator on in whichever room, and later light one of the multi fuel stoves, depending on the room. In fact,it’s lovely and warm in here. Works for us. Later, hot water bottles in bed, lovely bedding and a lovey night sleep. Grand!5

Central heating on about 4pm was 12 degrees and cold
Set at 16 until about 6pm then watching TV in bed under a beautiful feather duvet4 -
Lounge/Kitchen is down to 8.8 now, outside hasn't gone much above freezing all day and minus 4 is expected tonight, went for a walk about 4pm and the lanes were covered in ice. May need to put the fan heater on for a bit when tea is ready otherwise the meal, even a mug of tea, gets cold so quickly.3

It was literally freezing all day long - but bizarrely I still felt heat through the window when it was sunny this morning. No man is worth crawling on this earth.

^^ I bet no one living in Downing Street is having such conversations.
I really feel for those without shelter in this weather, and can quite understand why they turn to alcohol to warm themselves up.No man is worth crawling on this earth.

Interesting thread - it’s really tough. We had to suffer the outlay of a new boiler in October, but hopefully the payback will be lower bills. But have also taken a very hard look at usage. We have reduced thermo to 18 default for 2 reduced time zones a day. We boost when v cold. We’ve asked the boys to flag when they’re cold in their rooms - which they are not. They like throws anyway. We have a wood burner plus side, but live in a leaky timber frame bungalow down side. Healthy credit balance on energy bill still there and DD has reduced with subsidy, so must be working?"Is it that the future is so uncertain, the present so traumatic that we find the past so secure? I'm glad you've got a warm bed and can take the chill off elsewhere.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
