4 watts we are about to receive...!

I thinking it may be time to give in and pop the heating on. What is the consensus on the optimal temperature to keep things just ticking over? I was thinking 17° but not sure if that's too low?
I live in the middle of a brick terraced row but have terrible insulation (military housing, so am limited in what I can do)
The house is empty during the day so not sure whether just to heat when in or keep at the low temperature all the time. I do have two oil filled radiators to give a boost when needed.
I think I've read that 18C is good, though I know for sure I've also read that a lower background temperature is better than a burst of heat. How about 18 while you're at home, and maybe 16 while you're out? I think that's what I'm going to try today.

  • Yeah I think I’m gonna need a dehumidifier.

I don’t know where it all comes from. I don’t dry clothes in the house. The kitchen window is cracked open while cooking. I wipe down the bathroom after showers and wring the cloth out outside and hang it on the line.

I’m just reading a thread on the In My Home bit about mould and cond. I think I need to work out if I’ve wet air in the house condensing on cold windows, or it’s heat meeting cold that’s producing it’s on dampness. Itms? I didn’t have cond before the heating went on… But the curtains aren’t giving me a clue, that’s for sure!

Biomass heating on here in the morning for a couple of hours (10 radiators with TRVs) and it reaches 18c.  House is still comfortable for most of the day but we do light the log burner in the living room in the evening and leave the internal doors open so the heat travels around a bit especially up the stairs.

The outside temperature is around 7c during the day and 4c throughout the night at the moment.

  • Has anyone actually got a heat pump yet? I saw the virtue-signalling ad with the chap who drives a fuel-guzzler but that's-ok-as-he-has-a-heat-pump-which-saves-a-lot-more last night.

Wet air is the cause. Keeping internal RH low in winter is a challenge. Breathing and general moving about the house generates a surprising amount of water vapour, something in the region of a litre per person per day.
  • Yeah just being creates a lot of water.

My brain could chew over it til the cows come home, and I reckon the answer will be that it's a bit of everything. So I'm gonna start from the point of getting a dehumidifier and see how that helps.

Hmmm... window cracked open when cooking - doesn't sound enough to me.

  • It's walking a fine line between opening the window far enough to be letting the moisture out, and creating further damp air by the cold rushing in to meet the heat inside....

Dehumidifier it is then, or extraction fan.
