My heating is on a thermostat so if the temperature drops below where it is set it will come regardless of what time of year it is, at the moment the thermostat is set to 16 so it has been clicking on a few mornings recently when it's been a bit nippy, once the weather turns a lot cooler I will turn the setting up to 18 degrees where it will stay for the rest of the winter
  • Having been schooled at boarding school in northern Germany up to age 16, I still ALWAYS finish my shower with a cold shower. I am now 73!!  I can't bear NOT to do this and it keeps me warm all day! Perhaps training at a young age would help us keep healthy? I am lucky to be rarely ill.

my mom and dad always washed in cold water ( she didnt make us kids endure that thou) but l mention it because my mom had the most beautiful skin in her old age and not one single wrinkle, l dont remember her even using a face lotion... just soap, flanel and cold water. They did this because there was no money,, but they sure reaped the benefits.

  • Always set at 15 throughout the year (unless turned up during cold weather) never fully turn our heating off.

Multi fuel stoves are meant just for wood & smokeless coal.
For the frugal ,sourcing our own free wood is the best option otherwise buying wood/smokeless to burn can get very expensive very quick if you're using it as a main form of heating.
  • Self sourcer of wood here, otherwise known as scrounging(!): taking tree surgeon waste which would otherwise be chipped and dumped. Things like veg peelings would be too wet but you can bundle up and burn fruit tree prunings and the like. Apple wood does take an age to season though.  I sometimes use the odd briquette or half briquette at the beginning of a burn.

Last winter I used the gas central heating very few times and my dual fuel standing order is £20. If I've enough spare power from my PV I occasionally and briefly switch on an electric heater for localised heating.

I burn wood and coal- smokeless when the bituminous runs out within its legal time. Nothing else. The wood HAS to be seasoned- two years for me. My wood is always sourced for free. It takes time, but it’s still a saving. As the Energy Crisis deepens, people will ( like I have for thirty years) appreciate where their fuel and power comes from. I am fortunate,in that my cottage has a disproportionately huge garden to store woodpiles.
  • Wow winter has definitely arrived - woke up this morning at just before six and felt the house was too hot even though bedroom window is open and cold air was coming in so checked thermostat, which is in hall at bottom of stairs and discovered it was set to ten - DH has put it down before he went to bed as we try to remember to do every night during winter, yet even with it being set so low all the radiators were very hot.  Obviously will keep an eye case there is a problem with thermostat but had heating all checked just last month so should all be working fine.  So going to have to turn it down even lower it seems as don't like hot room to sleep in, prefer to snuggle under 13.5 tog duvet to stay warm.
