  • l checked temps in bedroom last night at  7pm teatime and it was 15c and living room was 18c.. ( no central heating on last night) just  all the pottery candles holders we light at night, so im very happy and comfortable with that.
Most of the rooms have been a comfortable 15c all day yesterday, outside 8c . Heating is only put on for an hr in early morning before l switch on the slow cooker for all day slow cooking evening meal.. they give off a lot of heat. We do only have 2 bedrooms though+ living room, plus a small kitchen and hallway, so not much to heat. We did make sure before we bought this property that it had good insulation, loft and wall insulation ,double glazed etc, so l guess it really helps.
The living room and bedroom is always warm during the day as we have large french windows in both so lm guessing any sunlight warms the rooms.

Mine is on. Its on 18 in the day from about 11ish and possibly 20 in the evening because I'm getting on lol and feel the cold. Sometimes I wear fingerless gloves indoors and wear warm clothes anyway, not put the heating on and wear a tshirt.
I go to bed at 10pm ( I read for hours being an insomniac but my dog is a hot water bottle) so the heating goes to 15 then so if it really did get cold in the night it would kick in. I have been known to wear a hat and gloves reading in the middle of the night.
My conservatory is the coldest room so since I spend a lot of time in there if it gets really freezing I put the halogen heater in there with me. I pay the same amount DD all year just to be able to put the heating on in the Winter without having to worry about it. I also now qualify for the winter fuel allowance so I see no point in being cold and miserable.

im beginning to think me and hubby dont feel the cold as im reading a lot on here have their heating on much more than me, im from the generation that had no central heating in house when growing up. We had coal fires in all the rooms including the bedroom, but non of them were ever lite ,only the living room. We dressed for school in front of that fire and the dinner table was set up in that room in front of that fire. Mom never had  any of the  3 bedroom coal fires  lite unless you happen to be ill in bed. And the 2nd best living room, (that was only used when visitors came,) that fire was only lite on xmas eve, xmas day and boxing day lol. But  l can honestly say the cold never bothered me and l was from the mini skirt era lol. Hubby just told me  my moms house was like an ice box when we were courting ( in that 2nd room ) and it was a shock to his system as he came from the 'posh' estate than us, and HIS house had central heating lol..ahh he must have really loved me to endure that for 2 years we were courting lol lol

I lived in a similar arrangment. There was a Rayburn in the kitchen and  when I brought friends back for coffee after an evening out we would sit in the kitchen as it was the warmest room in the house.

When I wore a mini skirt the only thing that kept me warm was pride.

The heating was on the week before last for OH at 5 in the morning for an hour and a bit but then not on again the rest of the day. I was in Wales last week and came home yesterday, house was bloody freezing so I put it on. Our thermostat is a hit and hope wifi affair that has to be placed in the coldest part of the house for the heating to actualy kick in. We have no thermometers anywhere so I have no idea what the temperature is. I have lit the fire tonight which will warm the bedroom upsatirs from the chimney that runs through it. I don't tend to put the heating on very often but the fire is lit when it's cold. It does a much better job of heating the house than the radiators which were installed in the sixties/seventies. They have Bakelite handles. I use my electric blanket a lot in the winter and reckon it' my top three of all time purchases.

  • We had our first frost of the season on Wednesday but managed to hold out until Thursday when we put the heating on.  I was aiming to last until November so pleased to have stretched it a few days longer.  We're just using the manual o/off switch for now rather than timer, and we have turned it down a couple of degrees.

I've not had mine on yet, although my daughter and I have been walking round the house with thick dressing gowns on in the evening's for last few weeks like poor Hugh Hefner wannabes, also have a single duvet on sofa for when we watching TV or listening music in evening.

That being said after a frost Tuesday night and a heavier frost Thursday when there was a nasty chill in the house, I thought it was time to test the central heating to make sure it works, so manually turned it on for 15 min's and it works fine. On the plus side temp's have picked up again and we've acclimatized so won't be using heating again till temperature drops.

Saying that we have a guest coming tonight for a few hours, so depending on their visible shivering I may begrudgingly turn it on. On the other hand I secretly wouldn't mind if the cancelled.😂

Right now,the windows are all open, and the back door too,so the dogs can come and go. We ( but my wife particularly) believe in fresh air through the place. I can see the vent on our neighbours house belching steam all day. They are a third of our age,and it must be piggin’ roasting in there! We have electric panel/ infra red heating in all the rooms for when it’s cold, but mainly our heating is the two multi fuel burners downstairs. The big one will be lit about three o’clock today. We must be made of tougher stuff,I reckon.

I live in a terraced street, with terraces on the back. For last 10 years or so since I have been more aware of the price of energy and the climate, all I can see is neighbours houses flues either side of me and to the back of mine belching steam/fumes all day. I wonder how many actually need the heating on, how many are actually home and how much they pay for energy. Then wonder how much is being unnecessarily wasted in my street/town and across the country.

Prices going up is not a good thing for people who have cut back and who have a limited budget, however for the blase I hope it will make them be more aware.

A young guy from work moved in with his partner 18 months ago from living at home with his parents, and he asked a few of us what he'll be paying for prices for bill's. When the price of energy came up he raised his eye brows and must have thought it was way off. Fast forward to a week ago he mentioned the price of energy and said "I hate looking at the smart meter when the boiler is on."
