  • I have to agree with the smoking Rosa, a complete and utter waste of money. I know how hard it is to stop, I did it over 30 years ago, the hardest thing I ever did but it can be done.

I've seen quite a few people have started to put theirs on already!
I'm still going to hold off until November if possible.
I have got the blankets and dressing gowns out ready along with slippers instead of flip flops.
    I wouldn't want their bills!
No it will be some time yet for me too.
MrsM has put the heating a couple of times in the evening.  3 to 4 hours uses 1 unit of gas so about 30p, hardly going to break the bank and putting into perspective less than the cost of 1 cigarette.  I don't get what all the fuss about heating bills, costs me about £3 a day mid winter to have the heating on 24/7 and that is with an antique inefficient boiler.

Some of us live in all electric buildings and that costs much more than gas.

My husband and I only have electricity and our heating runs at 2KW an hour at peak on the heater! We used to use the electric radiators (each were rated at 2KW) in our place but found them to take ages to heat and as they didn't have a temperature gauge hard to use as we have a chinchilla (used to be two chinchillas).
We invested in a Dyson cool and heat fan as I'm disabled and I overheat easily but also can't move as much and so when it's too cold I get cold easily. It also helps the chinchilla keep cool in heated times or a nice temp that we can control in winter. We found it to be more efficient energy wise (turns itself off when it has reached desired tempurature) and as we can keep an eye on the tempurature better for the chinchilla and me.

In winter/when it's cold we utilise dressing gowns a lot, we wear warmer slippers, we have blankets and/or snug rugs on the sofa and/or on the bed, the 10 tog duvet gets used (may get a 15 tog this year but will see), we have hot water bottles that warm you on the sofa watching TV or reading and warm the bed before sleeping as well as thermal underwear, tops etc. I have a cat onsie that my ma got me that I initially didn't wear but once I realised how warm it is basically live in during winter (with a tank top on underneath so as to not get to cold when needing the bathroom lol!).
Basically if you are still cold or breathing too cold air after the above we put the heating on as electric heating is costly. Same reason we fill the oven when we use it!

Still right now we haven't used the heating. It likely won't go on until November, which is usual.
Right now I'm wearing full length trouser pyjamas instead of the short ones I had been wearing previously and sometimes wearing a dressing gown (we both have a few of varying thickness). However our bedding is still just a sheet right now as we took the 4.5 tog out when it was too hot and we are still sleeping with the window on latch. If I'm not cold but OH does feel chilly he'll put a blanket over him but not me to keep warm. If we both get cold we'll put the duvet back in though.
I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy :D
  • On, 24/7. Never turned off. Timed thermostat decides whether it needs to pump through. As I is from up norff, the thermostat waits until the brass monkey clangs before pumping!

Definitely time to wash those thick winter woollies if they haven,t been done already.  They will soon be needed.
And also check old hot water bottles for leaks and replace now before there is a run on them in the shops.   Electric blankets too should be safety checked now.  Old ones are best replaced.

Had it on for an hour twice over the past couple of weeks, definitely moving into soup season Yayy. When I'm on my own I tend not to feel the cold but if I have a yp staying (foster carer) I have to be mindful that they may feel the cold and don't want to say. Lots of cuddle blankets about and throws to offset slight dips in temperature, more hot food at the ready, defo hot chocolate at bedtime. Will set radiators to appropriate temperatures for room usages, and I'm ready to rock.

My heating worked last night but not this morning and as it's Bank Holiday it is almost certain to be tomorrow before the plumber comes. I will have to source a hot water bottle before then!
