  • I popped on the last two nights for like an hour each time ... just takes the nip out the air and I woke this morning to a freezing house so had it on for an hour again. I have little ones too .... I put an extra blanket on my youngest ones bed (sewn quilt , topper thing) which I think helps and the older two are teens so they just wear winter pjs and are fine , but it is getting much colder at night right now.

lets hope you make it !, fingers crossed (in frozen position)
  • Another one here hoping to manage until November. Still t-shirt weather indoors here in the south east but we put fleeces on if it gets chilly in the evenings. We have put the winter duvet on though as the nights were getting noticeably colder in the bedroom.

    Same here.:)
  • Definitely trying to hold out for at least November!
We are a family of 5 with 3 kiddies who I make sure have lots of layers and big booty slippers ready and I've nabbed one of my hubbys big jumpers this year!
To be quite honest, we can't afford to put the heating on, and when we do really, really have to put it on, it will be after all the layers, blankets etc have been used first and we will only be able to put it on for a little bit at a time.
I remember about 10 years ago when we first rented out a house we had the heating on constantly over the autumn-winter period and it only came to about £30-40pm in total, all elec and gas, all heating included. Now our bill is about £40pm in total (£30pm elec, £10pm gas for cooking) but with no heating on at all. I'm sat here now with cold hands, no lights on and keep reminding the kids to turn stuff off and put their slippers on!
  • I wait until the clocks change to put the heating on. Even then I decide how many units I can use per month. Trying to stay within a budget. Plus I always have some in reserve for the really cold weather. I tend to have a blanket on the couch at times when it is cold.
  • We don't run the central heating at all since we had the wood stove installed, the boiler is just on a couple of times a day to heat the water tank. We don't even light the stove until we absolutely have to either, just put on an extra layer and have throws to wrap up in on the back of the sofa. I find our health has been better since we started doing this and find going in to centrally heated homes quite uncomfortable, mainly because we dress for our temperature indoors!

oh crikey, my thoughts are with those of you who have no choice. At least when when I was young the houses were poorly insulated and although freezing, they did have good ventilation so mould was not a problem. Now with double glazing and foam filled walls and not enough money to heat a home, killer mould is a big problem and most times is caused by poor internal ventilation

Think on, if you can possibly wrap up and have ventilation, then do so
  • My thermostat is set at 18degrees, so the heating is kicking in for an hour or so in the evenings.
