We have just recently set the heating on a timer to come on for an hour early in the morning to make getting up for work easier. Can't bear getting out of bed when its freezing!
I had a bit of trouble with the boiler at first, having not used it really at all over the summer. I didn't want to have to pay for a plumber so I did a bit of googling and have found a selection of videos on Youtube by a company called corgi homeplan which showed me in a really simple guide how to reset my boiler which miraculously fixed everything! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhaPXECpxT8
Definitely worth checking them out before paying for a professional!0 -
Sorry but I don't think that is something to recommend. I have a lodger and would worry if I didn't get our system checked every year. Too many horror stories not to do that.0

We did the big switch on today. Have it coming on for an hour first thing. The temp has gone down so far tonight that it's very tempting to wack it on again but early bed instead I think." Your vibe attracts your tribe":D

Here the central heating is on a thermostat timer. It comes on first thing for a few hours, then off until late afternoon / early evening. It goes off again as the house warms up and thankfully holds the heat - if the temperature really drops it comes on before bedtime. I have it off overnight.
That's the thermostat set at 16 deg.
We have acclimatised for 16 deg indoors but we do wear layers and have fleecy blankets etc for sitting around in the evening. Being a lady of a certain age, sometimes I get a bit warm with the odd hot flush!
I find having my thermo set at 21 degrees is nice and comfy, if I had it set at 16 the house would feel very cool , you may as well not having the heating on , if I had my heating set to 16 id have to wear a couple of thick layers which I find so very uncomfortable , I do wear a thin micro fleece indoors with the heating on at 21 .....My motto is " one life live it ".....:)0 -

Just on for an hour this morning to get up and showered, then again this evening for an hour, but it was so warm the dog was panting to go outside and cool down. I have the thermostat set at 16 degrees so the radiators are warm enough to take any chill off. Candles and a fleece add to the warm and cosy feeling.0

I have mine set generally at 16/17, then if i'm cold I change it up to 20.
I can remember reading somewhere last year that 16 is the optimum temp to not catch anything....no clue if it's true or not.
I'm on days off again and have still just left in on the timer for morning and early evening. I did do a couple of boost hours this evening though as it was chillier.
I am also of a certain age......and even had the fan on earlier.................:D. :rotfl: :rotfl: in December....!?!?Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
We have the dreaded electric storage heaters but have learned how to manage them to best effect.
We only have two of them switched on and they run on a specially low tariff which comes on at around 10.30 pm- answer to them using loads is to switch them off when we go to bed so they don't come on again in the day, which they will do at about 1.30 pm for another hour. They are set on medium unless the weather turns absolutely brasic. This means the apartment is warm in the mornings and we also basically face south so any sun comes in the front and helps.
I like to open windows front and back for a while to let the air through and dry the condensation at about 11.00 am unless blowing a hooley.
We now have two oil filled electric radiators which go on at 400 watts when it gets dark. These stay on until about 11.00pm.
We both have thermal underwear - a must if you want to stay warm up here - and I am only wearing vests at the moments. When it gets colder I shall put on the tights as well and then can add another layer with a fleece, or if on settee with a blanket.
Every door and window is draught-proofed (obviously) and we have thermal lined curtains at every window and door also. Last year we also bought a draught-free letter box which helps.
I will be interested to see what the bills are with the electric rads which we haven't had before, but it is nice being warmer.
Hope you all have a warm week

LYNNEJK......Do be careful with using a lot of electric heaters, I know youve got storage heaters on the night rate , but the 2 rads on over a period of time will add up, go on the Energy thread and ask people on there what they cost , as theres some very savvy posters on there ....
Very cold here today , had the GCheating come on timer at 6 am, ive just lit the fire and its beautiful and cosy , dawg in usual place, im going to have cod with new potatoes for tea in front of fire.......My motto is " one life live it ".....:)0 -

I'd be interested to know what others are setting their temperature at?
Sitting here with thermostat set at 22C and it is very comfortable, we have the heating on from 09.30 until 21.00 everyday, dear knows how much it will cost but our winter fuel allowance will help soften the blow.
We have been given a chart with a thermometer on it by our our council indicating levels of suitable temperatures, not wanting to alarm you but they say 16C is bordering on dangerous for older folks! But hey I guess you folks are a bit younger than us.0
