as i have run down my freezer over the last few weeks i am now in the process of filling it up again by cooking a meal an evening and freezing several portions- by having the oven or hob on for ans hour or so is warming the house and providing me with cheap easy food options for the next few weeks. the house has been so warm with the oven heat i have found myself not needing to wrap myself up in a throw. it did start to get a bit chilly last night around 10ish but i was tierd after a very busy day at work and figured that sleeping under a warm duvet would do me better than the washing up so i left the dishes soaking for the morning. still no need for heating. i expect i will have to get round to lots of warming housework once the freezer is full. i figure at the moment with the freezer still having space in it i am better using gas to cook as well as heating the house.

I've put the heating on the '1 hour boost' a few times in the last 2 weeks. Still haven't put it on timer yet so not too bad...!

I have been putting a fan heater on in my bedroom first thing when I get ready for work, though.

Can someone tell me - would it be cheaper to run a small fan heater for 15 minutes in one bedroom or turn the central heating on for half an hour - which would obviously do the whole house?? I would have thought the small heater was cheaper but, they do use a LOT of electricity!

It will be cheaper using the fan heater for 15 minutes. If you are running the fan heater on setting 1 then for 15 minutes you will be using 1/4 of a unit, setting 2 would be 1/2 unit and setting 3 would be 3/4 unit. So if your daytime unit is 12p then 15 minutes on setting 1 would be 3p. You can find out your daytime unit cost from your bill and do the maths. (My maths is based on a 3kw fan heater with 3 heat settings)

I have been doing the same as you with the boost button. Don't want to charge the storage heaters till I am actually going to need the heating a lot.

Here on the NW coast of N.Ireland, the heating has been on for the past three weeks now - hour in the morning and between 5 and 10 in the evening with the log stove being used in the days for the old folk as they are feeling the cold and damp now,

However it is a huge house and Im sat here with a rug over my knees when sat here on the pc

One saving grace is that oil has come down by about 300 quid a fill now so Im feeling a bit easier about it.

And at the end of the day I cant be letting my parents freeze and they do feel the cold a lot easier as they are less mobile - simple as that

Well I'm still holding out but it's getting a bit uncomfy now. Especially at the moment as I have wet hair and feel shivery... :o

Still holding out here, this evening was chilly but DNeighbour invited me in and she has her heating on so got nicely warmed up ;) . I'm a bit of a night owl so about now I start prepping meals to put in the oven at 12.30am when the cheap electric kicks in. I also run the washing machine overnight so the kitchen is a nice little hot spot where I sit and read/iron/mend etc until the oven goes off, before going to bed at 2.30'ish - bad me :naughty: . If I had a laptop instead of the pc which is in my computer room (grand name for the 3rd bedroom/glory hole) I could sit and watch the cooker while I check on here for more money saving ideas  .

Also DS has left his rowing machine here while he moves house. The doc said I need keep active to keep the symptoms of COPD at bay, so I've no excuse for complaining of cold any more :rotfl:
  • It stills feels quite warm in Devon! I haven't even been tempted to put the heating on yet. When I get up it's a bit nippy, but I just slip on my fleece jacket for half an hour and then I'm fine. :D

By the time a couple of hot coffees are down the hatch and I've rushed around waking up the little hairys I'm feeling quite warm! The small hairys snuggle under their fleece blankets on the sofa when they first get up (they do this winter and summer cos it just feels cosy), so noone has complained they are cold yet.

I think we will easily last until November at this rate. Maybe even December? Bring it on! :T

  • Good morning all

Well, I've had my two mugs of tea and toasted crumpet courtesy of Mr P and am tucked up under the duvet with one eye watching Saturday Kitchen and the other reading the forum on the laptop.

Having a lazy morning as we are babysitting two grand daughters tonight so their mum and dad can go to see a movie for once in their lives. So, it will be a bit of a later then usual evening for us.

Mr P won £16.50 on the Euromillions, so will go for an early supper at Toby Carvery beforehand using money off voucher from the newspaper for roast dinner and an icecream.

Central heating is still off and I am nice and toasty under this duvet.

    All have a nice weekend.
