My kit is uber loud at 12 position.

I haven't been beyond 2 (out of 10). That was as loud as I dare.

If you heard my neighbours you'd be a bit less sympathetic.
Anyway, I only wanted to see how loud it could get (out of curiosity and temptation) for a second or two.
The amp is 115W, but now I've connected them to a 170W amp. Should be a better match.
Now another question: The amp says 4ohm or more. What is more? 6, 8... or 2, 1?

A lower value ohm means more load (so 8 ohm is LESS of a load for the amp than 4 ohm)
With regards to the amp 'more' means over 4 (Although thoughts its badly named in this regard)
Whats the amp make and model?

They are 170W floor-standing Jamo speakers.

    The 170W means absolutely nothing

    Quite old... http://audio-database.com/PIONEER-EXCLUSIVE/amp/sa-6300-e.html

The other amp is a Sony TA-VE170 (slightly more modern).

So, is 8 more than 4, or is 1 more? I've read a bit about it, but still have no idea about that.

Ive just said. With regards to what the amp is asking for then anything over 4 (4.1, 4.2, 6,8 or whatever) is 'more'
The ohm rating of a loudspeaker is the 'load' it puts upon the amp. Most amps will allow speakers between 4 and 8 ohms. Anything under 4 and most amps wouldnt be able to take the strain (Many amps struggle with just 6 ohm speakers mind)
So the lower the ohm on the speaker the more the amp will struggle to drive them

The pioneer you have should drive the speakers no problem (Although it has a max of 20 watts rms)
The sony is 25 watts per channel and im struggling to find an actual spec, but I suspect it wont drive the speakers well (ie, the ohms of the speakers are too low for the amp to drive)

I've been using 6ohm speakers (front and centre) and 3ohm rear speakers with the Sony for quite a while, and it gets quite warm.

Im suprised it hasnt blown yet
most amps would struggle with 3 ohm speakers (And bear in mind that the 3 ohm figure is just an average, they might dip down to around 2 ohms at certain frequencies)

Does you sony not have documentation as to what the maximum ohm speakers to be used are?

I've got the manual in PDF, but I'm not sure how to post pictures.
It says above the speaker connectors 8 - 16ohm.

    Er... are you sure?

8 ohms is higher impedance than 4, 16 ohms higher impedance than 8.

I was always taught that if an amp is designed to drive 8 ohms, then you should use 8 ohms or above (16 or higher), and that you'd be asking for trouble if you enthusiastically used 4 ohm speakers with an amp intended to run at 8 ....
