You could post the pdf to http://rapidshare.com/

But I doubt theres anything else I need to know.

Basically the manuals telling you to use speakers between 8 and 16 ohms

Using anything less than 8 means your amps prone to either blowing a fuse, or even blowing up

Its your amp. But as you run it at the moment your risking you house going up in flames!

Let me know if that is of any use. Then I'll delete it cos it's too big.

    Er... are you sure?

8 ohms is higher impedance than 4, 16 ohms higher impedance than 8.

I was always taught that if an amp is designed to drive 8 ohms, then you should use 8 ohms or above (16 or higher), and that you'd be asking for trouble if you enthusiastically used 4 ohm speakers with an amp intended to run at 8 ....

    What youve said is correct

Perhaps ive explained badly (Due to what the amps asked for)

I think if you run that amp full-tilt into a lower impedance than it's designed for then you're likely to blow the amp, but equally well, it could take the speakers with it, depending on how well-designed (or not) it is.

It's not particularly high-powered, you'd be far better off with something a bit more powerful.

My question would be - do you REALLY want a repair bill for both amp and speakers just to make a point to the neighbours?

I thought I was beginning to understand, now I'm more confused.
So even though I've used the 6 & 3ohm speakers with the Sony (8 - 16) for a while I should stop? Does that explain why the fan was constantly on?

    Are the 4 - 8ohm speakers a match with the 8 - 16ohm amp?
Are the 6ohm speakers a match with the 4 or higher amp?

And I mean at neighbour-friendly volumes, but everyday use.

Yes, that's probably the reason it was running hot. Keep it at moderate volumes and you should be OK.

I wouldn't use 4-8 speakers with an 8-16 amp at any more than moderate volumes either

I'd be happy with 6 ohm speakers with an amp that wanted 4 or higher.

In terms of matching amp to speaker power, I was always taught you're better running a high-power amp into low-power speakers than vice versa. Far better to give the speakers a clean signal with the amp working well within its limitations than have the speakers soaking up everything the amp can give, and pushing the amp to the redline..... the wattage of the speakers shouldn't be taken as an indicator of loudness either.

    More than likely

NO. Again, the lower the ohms, the more of a load it puts on the amp. So you should use higher rated ohm speakers. An amp will find an 8 ohm speaker easier to drive than a 4 ohm one.

    yes

A 4ohm amp will happily drive 6 ohm speakers

It was never about getting one up on the neighbours; it was more about would it be safe if I ever got tempted to see how loud it could go, and trying to understand the whole thing in general.

    Why isn't the 8 in both 4 - 8 and 8 - 16 a match?
