    From an Employers perspective

Heavy snow is causing problems as employees struggle to get in to work. As freezing conditions and relentless snow bring parts of the UK to a standstill, you need to be clear on your payment obligations to those who are unable to travel to work.
The whiteout has been forecast for at least another two weeks, so the time is right to let your employees know where they stand financially.
What does it mean for me?
You’re not obliged to pay an employee if they can’t attend work due to adverse weather conditions, unless their contract of employment specifically states that they are entitled to salary under those circumstances. You should be aware, however, that unless there is a contractual clause within your contract to allow deductions from salary, any withheld payments could result in an unlawful deduction from wages claim.
It’s the employee’s responsibility to organise their travel to work, unless you, as the employer, contractually provide transport for employees to and from work. In the event that bad weather stops your employees from using their normal method of transport, you should first advise them to explore alternative means of safe transport.
You may, however, exercise discretion when discussing travel options in severe weather conditions, as it would be considered unreasonable to expect an employee to jeopardise their safety.
If your employees still can’t travel to work and can’t work from home, depending on their contracts, you can take the following options:
    • Advise your employees that any time off work in these circumstances will be unpaid.
    • Pay them on a discretionary basis, but only in exceptional cases.
    • Ask them to take the time off as paid annual leave.
    • Pay them as normal, but ensure that they make up the lost time.
The same principles will apply for any employees who are obliged to leave work early due to adverse weather conditions.

Craftwork Cards Special today 15% of all orders with the message 15PERCENT as the promotional code. For gold card members there's your usual 10% so it make it 25% off your order up until 9am Monday 6th.

Todays special at Wifey Towers is curry, hot for OH and mild for me.

His lemon drizzle cake was pretty good, not sure what he's going to bake today.

A little bit of snow here today & it feels a bit warmer?

Flourgirl - OMG! Frosty windows inside was a regular thing when I was a child (long time ago) when we only used to heat the living room & kitchen.

Wifey - Can I come for tea too? Thanks for info about the pay't of wages in bad weather - when I was an (un) civil servant you were expected to get in if you could walk there in a certain time (can't remember what it was, maybe 1hr) or report to your nearest office if it was closer to your home) in order to get paid. One time, (in 1980's) I had a chap who turned up at my office colouring in bar chart graphs (with crayons)!!!:rotfl: He made it to his own office the next day!

Padster - hope you win your battle with your line manager or better still, she see sense & you don't have to battle.

Bunbun & Madfrog - Sorry to hear of your snowy driving exploits. And I thought all the idiot drivers were here!!

    Please take care everyone.

PepPop & Scattyjan & Marg too, yep! 'course I'll adopt you all but over the weekend it might be a case of five loaves and two fishes, I've come to work without my debit card so I can't go shopping today.

I think OH is being a bit of a Marie-Antoinette, let Wifey eat cake!

I think we must be very lucky here after reading about all your snow and ice. We've had a very light sprinkling of snow, looks a bit like icing sugar on the garden path. Thank goodness my days of travelling to work are well and truly over and we can walk to our Co-op to get supplies.

Flourgirl I remember ice on the inside of windows from when I was a child, the only fire was in the living room and if the kitchen was too cold you light the gas stove! We had a paraffin heater in the bedroom for the worst days which our mom, who'd laid the coal fire downstairs when she got up, would come up and light for us and we'd wait for the bedroom to warm up a bit before crawling out from under our blankets. We're all so lucky these days with central heating. Ours is on all day as we're at home and a couple of nights OH has left it on low overnight.

OH's hospital experience yesterday wasn't very pleasant. To have the verification/dry run then followed by radiotherapy meant he had to lie on a very hard table (rather than a more comfy bed type thing) being clamped down with the mask over his head/chest, holes for nose and mouth but not for eyes and he was like that for around half an hour or so. The mask stops you moving. I wonder what happens if you need to sneeze, cough, have an itch or are claustrophobic??????? He found it very uncomfortable but today's and following sessions will be radiotherapy only which should only take about 15 mins. From Monday he will be an inpatient and be allowed home at weekends. Because of the original delay in referring him for "urgent" treatment (which took a month) he now has to continue treatment until New Year's Eve rather than Christmas Eve but he does get four days off over Christmas.

I've put a couple of cards you know where showing what not to do if you're thinking of glittering after using an embossing folder :rotfl: .

I'm going to sort out my Christmas card list today and see if there's anyone else I'd like to send one of my cards to, not sure I have enough and perhaps I can make a few quick ones over the weekend. I don't send hand made to everyone, just the ones I know who understand and appreciate them.

Wifey You mentioning curry has made me think I might get some chicken out of the freezer and make a big batch over the weekend and freeze some for a quick meal later on, just need to buy some more onions.

Keep warm and safe everyone, take care if you have to go out.

    P.S. Well done winner!
