30 degree wash

Here in Scotland, we have very soft water so I use just a tiny bit of washing powder---about 1/4 of what they tell you........after all, they want you to use more and then buy more!
Also, my clothes don't get really dirty. My 85 yr. old mother thinks my nieces change and wash their clothes far too often and unnecessarily. She says it's only because they can throw their clothes into the machine---if they had to had wash them or stand over single tub with a wringer as she had to do, they would soon cut down---and their clothes would last longer!0 -

Hi folks,
I've lurked on this forum for a while and never had time to answer many of the posts on domestic appliances. I am heavily involved in the industry and run a website dedicated to appliances as well as my own repair business and we produce our own brand of washing machine.
The above question is easy to answer and, in doing so it solves a lot of other issues at the same time as all that is required is a maintenance wash, I wrote a piece on that in this article.
I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting the link.
Eco balls are a load of codswallop I'm afraid, they don't do much bar fizz and release oxygen into the water. We have, in the field, seen several issues caused by people using them, namely mould/bacteria build up internally as well as calcification of the heater etc. I would strongly suggest that you avoid them.
On the issue of the 30C wash, for some things it's okay, but not for all. The best advice is to stick to the clothing labels as you can damage clothes by not doing so, although all too often the results of that damage is compound and happens over a number of washes.
At 60C almost all bugs etc. are killed, to do any better in terms of sterilisation you really would have to go to a commercial machine that is WRAS Regulation approved.
90C is only really any use for dyeing and bleaching.
Sorry but there's a lot of myth and disinformation out there on this subject, if I can answer any questions I will do.

I try to keep up with a few forums when I can, it's not easy though.

aha ! now I know (taps side of nose). Thanks to your advice I am now using Ariel Colour & its great, even for son's eczema, & I do notice a difference in the clothes. I have to confess I only use a 30 wash occasionally, am just in the habit of using 40.0

I know it's meant to be super eco-friendly and economical but how many of you actually wash at 30 degrees?
My w/m doesn't even do that temperature, 40C with two dashes under or economy which is cold!!! In any case I find that Persil non bio doesn't all dissolve even at 40C :mad:0 -
I wash at 40 as the last time I tried 30, my power did not dissolve properlyI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Quick Grabbit, Freebies, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning and the UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.

I nearly always wash at 30, but use a liquid detergent. I sometimes put in soda too and that seems to disolve fine. I've used powder at 30 and that can be a bit hit and miss and squashy tablet things seems to be no good at all.

Hello, I wash my clothes on a 40 degree quick wash. Mine only has a 30 degree wool wash that is pretty useless for kids dirty clothes. I think all new washing machines will have better 30 degree wash cycles.0

I sometime use a 30 wash for undies and delicates. It's OK for tights and stuff but it doesn't get my son's muddy PE socks clean at all! Blow what the ads say, I don't think 30 is hot enough for every day use. I use 40 degrees for most washes, and 60 degrees for grotty things like dirty teatowels.0
