    Hi all,

well where do I start... I will avoid going into a life story here... I don't believe I am an alcoholic, or perhaps more accurately I hope I am not..... Why? Because I have already overcome smoking and gambling addictions and I know with both it was either complete abstinance or nothing... I would like to believe that I could enjoy a beer or two from time to time...

What I do know for sure is that I have been drinking at levels which have been very unhealthy in so many ways.. I had a very bad New year last year, prior to that I had been drinking a bottle of wine every night for probably the best part of the previous 3 years... I devided to stop at a time when I was under a lot of pressure and had something of a mental melt down... It only lasted a week but for that week I thought I was finnished as a functioning father, husband and employee...

I seen my GP who didn't think there was a problem just some anxiety, he wasn't worried re the booze levels... I knew I had to stop so packed the alcohol in completely for a month. I have not touched the wine since... Instead I have drunk a few beers not lots maybe 2-4 at a time but this has started to be most if not every night.. I have got into the habit of relaxing by this means... So I feel very unhealthy, I am a stone and a half overweight and the levels of drinking is at the back of my head worrying me..

So here I am, looking to cut down initially... I want to be able to drink sensibly... should that not work then I know it will need to be abstinence.... I have had 2 drink free days Tue/Wed and plan on another tonight... I am then thinking I will have a couple of drinks on christmas day and eve.

From reading others posts I think this will be a good way to keep motivated and to given and receive support from others in a similar place.

so hi everyone, I hope I can contribute also....

Welcome Dproven , I think it's an excellent idea to get some AF days in before Christmas. It's not too late to set yourself a little target (include the days you've done of course;)) for December, it might help. I know, and so do most others on here, how easy it is to just fall into the habit of nightly drinking. It's as if you deserve it after a day's work or because it's the weekend or because it's hot or because it's cold or........
