Nix re large downloads I've been using
http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm.I found this on http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm which being a newcomer (12 mths) to the web I found a good source of advice. The downloadmanager oversees the download and if you lose connection it will resume where you left off, most sites seem to support this system. It's got lots of options to schedule downloads etc which I haven't bothered to explore.
I know what its like to lose a lengthy download @99%.
Connecting has been difficult tonight this is the first to last more than a minute, can they tell it was my 5th and last attempt.
oap glad to see you're still keeping an eye on us!
I must say if I do move to BB you and Guesswho have swayed me towards Newnet but then the Virgin deal looks Ok,also my brother-in-law works in IT and uses Virgin at home.If thats a recommendation!
Thanks for giving me this computer (I would never have gone out and payed money for one).
Also what about wireless ?Listening to conversations at work this seems to cause the most problems when setting up BB.One thing to be avoided?
A workmate (complete novice) bought a computer to keep up to date and take advantage of Orange free BB , this needed a BT line to be reconnected (only used a mobile). The wrangling between BT and Orange over what had to be done and then the setting up of the initially faulty wireless system has kept us enthralled for weeks!
The fact that the phone line is tied up is not a big deal for me-I live alone and unloved-if I need to be contacted the important people know my mobile number.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
spud17 - thanks for that. I was actually using Jetcar, a freeware program I've had for yonks which can resume downloads. Problem was resuming it!
Interesting that you're having connection problems when mine have been ok and I have problems when others are presumably ok. Wonder if they, at Bis*it, take each of us in turns?
Re wireless, hard wiring is always more reliable than wireless but will never have its' flexibility. Each wireless setup is unique unto itself but the very nature of it means that it's going to be more problematic. Having said that, especially in the LAN environment, the ease of installation and ability is a big bonus but security is more of an issue.
Ever considered one of those Russian brides? They may have huge biceps but, by golly, they'll make a man out of you! :rolleyes:I'm NOT political so DON'T correct me!0 -

Hi, well I had thought of Virgin as it seemed a good buy, but you have to be careful, I believe, on dialling during the day, I think you would need 1899 or similar, also their helpline was 25p a minute, so it put me off, regards oap0 -
ok can someone clarigy this for me. I have been a fast4 member for several years but they have been bought out by biscuit/v21. I am now on b/b and want to cancel my dailup. I however have not been charged for this month and cant find their details on my direct debit list? Has my account been cancelled? I cant login at fast4 because they are not fast anymore, this is the first I've heard about any of this no letter anything. Should I assume my account is cancelled or is there a number to phone to confirm this. Any advice appreciated I'm confused.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is gift; that is why it's called the present.

Where Bis*it is concerned, I really wouldn't assume anything. Some of us are still with the service and we haven't paid this month either, yet...
Post by alared (#984 page 50) gives some details for you re cancellations.
Good luck!I'm NOT political so DON'T correct me!0 -

I'm also on dial-up, and I haven't paid this month either.
Perhaps they are letting us have a free month for all the aggro last year.
:rotfl: Sorry, couldn't resist that.0 -
For once their inefficiency is working in our favour, but for how long?
Shhhhh.....I do believe this is the 2nd month they've not taken money out...I'm NOT political so DON'T correct me!0 -
More trouble this morning
can get connected easily but then when you get to a wbsite hardly anything happens.
I keep connecting then disconnecting `til I manage to get "good connection" that will actually let me go somewhere.
As regards payments
the amount of aggro Biscits caused,it should be free for the rest of the year
a right bunch of merchant bankers!0 -

Same here - it's just taken me 20 mins to get a decent enough connection to send an email... :wall:I'm NOT political so DON'T correct me!0 -
I'm also suffering with intermittant access - can only access half my email accounts, and whilst MSE is fine I can't Google at all. WEIRD !
Anyway - a while ago in similar circumstances I found this.
Looking on their website it suggests that enabling the PROXY SERVER will help.
QUOTE:
V21 recommends that if you are connecting through your V21 connection you always turn your proxy settings on. Using our webcache will give you both faster and more reliable web browsing.
However it does not tell you what to set it to.
Does anyone here have this enabled themselves or the information to try it ?
Any help regards this gratefully accepted.
